Today, AB 793, the Fairness to Dogs and Community Safety Act—authored by Assemblymember Nick Schultz (D-Burbank) and cosponsored by Social Compassion in Legislation and the Los Angeles Democrats for the Protection of Animals, passed the full Assembly with a unanimous vote of 68-0.

We thank Assemblymember Schultz for his leadership, coauthor Assemblymember Alanis, and Assemblymembers Bryan and Hadwick, who all spoke in strong support on the Assembly floor.

“We’re thrilled by the 68-0 vote!” said Judie Mancuso of Social Compassion in Legislation, a cosponsor of the bill. “This overwhelming support shows how far we’ve come as a community in advancing animal rights. Thanks to the power of social media, the public’s advocacy, and lawmakers who truly understand the issue, it's clear: every dog deserves their day in court—no more judgments based solely on breed or facing unjust outcomes.”

The bill now goes to the Senate Judiciary Committee.
