Concern with Proposed Changes - Fairfax County Parkway and Roberts Road

I wanted to share with you my concerns about a Virginia Dept. of Transportation (VDOT) study we were just informed about. VDOT is studying potential safety, operational, and multimodal improvements for Roberts Parkway from the Fairfax County Parkway to Burke Centre Parkway. While I am aware of a high number of crashes at the Roberts Parkway/Burke Centre Parkway intersection that could be alleviated by some of the VDOT proposals at that location, there are changes proposed for the Roberts Parkway/Karmich St./Fairfax County Parkway intersection that are concerning to anyone that drives the Fairfax County Parkway in this stretch.

Specifically, VDOT is proposing to remove the option for those who reside in the approximately 30 homes on Karmich St./Karmich Ct. neighborhood to turn left onto northbound Fairfax County Parkway or straight onto Roberts Parkway. Those leaving that community (including school buses and delivery vehicles) would have to turn right to head south on the Fairfax County Parkway and wait to make a U-Turn at the signal at Burke Lake Road and Fairfax County Parkway. I am a regular traveler of this section of the Fairfax County Parkway, and I see the real issue on this stretch of the Fairfax County Parkway is at Burke Lake Road and the Fairfax County Parkway. Putting additional strain on that intersection will increase northbound Fairfax County Parkway congestion and conflicts. Rather than putting in a double left at Roberts where there are no backups, our precious transportation funds should be used to place a double left at Burke Lake Road where it will reduce congestion and improve the quality of residents’ lives. I do support most of the VDOT recommendations to improve the Roberts Parkway/Burke Center Parkway intersection where there are a lot of accidents.

I plan to share the above with VDOT, please let me know if you see things differently. Either way, please share your thoughts/concerns regarding the proposed improvements currently under consideration with VDOT by completing their survey here
