Dr. Greene Discusses the Biggest Factors in Cancer Mortality Rates in February's Clinical Corner

rick.jpg

Cancer deaths in the United States are falling, with four million deaths prevented since 1991, according to the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) annual report published in January 2024. At the same time, the society reported that the number of new cancer cases had ticked up to more than two million in 2023, from 1.9 million in 2022. Cancer remains the second leading cause of death in the United States, after heart disease.

Doctors believe that it is urgent to understand changes in the death rate, as well as changes in cancer diagnoses. This annual report is made possible through the diligent work of all of you working in hospital-based and state cancer registries as well as SEER registries. The ACS highlighted three chief factors in reduced cancer deaths: declines in smoking, early detection, and greatly improved treatments.

Breast cancer mortality is one area where treatment has a significant impact. The death rate from breast cancer has fallen to 27 per 100,000 women in 2019 from 48 per 100,000 in 1975. That includes metastatic cancer, which accounted for nearly 30 percent of the reduction in the breast cancer death rate.

Hopefully these trends will continue for all cancers reported in our cancer registries!

Improve Data Integrity with CRStar's Database Validation Report

As cancer registrars, we know the importance of data quality. Luckily, there are multiple ways to ensure data quality. This month’s tip will focus on identifying possible duplicate cases, an extremely timely topic as we approach the 2024 NCDB Call for Data. The more edits and quality checks we do in preparation for the Call for Data, the better we position ourselves for easy and seamless data submissions.

Duplicate cases are created by transposing numbers in a date of birth or social security number, or by misspelling a name. CRStar’s Database Validation report is used to identify possible duplicate cases. This report is located within the System Administration module. When running the report, the user has the option of checking for a duplicate last name and date of birth, or by social security number. This report searches the database and will display a list of suspected duplicates for review.

If a true duplicate case exists, the cases can be merged or combined, and the duplicate case can be deleted from the system. This feature is located in the Abstract Management module under Abstract Utilities. The user will identify patient number 1, which is the case to keep and patient number 2, the case to merge and delete from the database.

Combined, these CRStar features will help maintain the integrity of your data and help ease the NCDB Call for Data process. It is recommended to run this report and reconcile duplicates monthly prior to your state submission. For assistance with these features, please submit a support ticket and a member of our team will be happy to assist!

Join Us in Celebrating Sally Kruse!

For more than two decades, the name Sally Kruse was synonymous with the cancer registry profession and, in particular, CRStar. Sally began her long tenure with ERS, a Health Catalyst Company, in 1995, retiring in December 2021. Since she’s retired, we have greatly missed her indomitable spirit and unparalleled expertise.

To celebrate NCRA’s 50th anniversary celebration, the organization launched the 50 for 50 Recognition Effort to recognize and spotlight influential oncology data specialists that were nominated by their peers. To kick off the series, Melanie Rogan, ODS-C, Solutions Architect, has written a tribute to recognize and honor Sally. Please take a moment to celebrate the exceptional Sally Kruse!
