Hackmatack Youth Camps

Hackmatack is offering two youth camps this summer!

Our Hackmatack camps are a fun way to introduce the young actor to theater in a laidback and beautiful setting. Our programs are geared to experiential, hands-on learning and are taught with a strong focus in developing socio-emotional skills, such as agency and empathy, while also teaching young thespians about theater education, music, and the ins-and-outs of putting on a production.

For the budding actor, our three week camp allows plenty of time for them to make new friends and develop a fundamental understanding of theater.

Our two week intensive for young teenagers gives them a chance to hone their craft, and consider a future in the performing arts.

Registration is ongoing, with a tuition discount for registered campers by April 30th.

Bluegrass Concert Series returns!

We are thrilled to announce the return of our popular Bluegrass concert series this summer!

Starting in mid-July, join us on Sundays from 11 to 1 for our entertaining bluegrass on the porch sessions. Our concerts are led by the incredibly talented Cecil Abels.

Similar to last year, everyone is invited to bring an instrument and join in for a bluegrass jam towards the end of the weekly concert. Or just bring a picnic, relax, and enjoy the show!

So, what is a..."Hackmatack" anyway?

A Hackmatack tree (also known as a Tamarack or Eastern Larch) is a coniferous (cone-bearing) tree. Native to cold climates, a Hackmatack tree is unique in the fact that every fall it sheds it's needles much like a deciduous tree sheds its leaves.

So why are we called Hackmatack? The story goes that our founder, S. Carleton Guptill, when choosing a name for our Playhouse back in the winter of 1971-1972, appreciated the symbolic metaphor. Just like a Hackmatack tree, Hackmatack Playhouse goes to rest every fall and is re-born each spring with theater, concerts, and the hustle and bustle of summertime in Maine.

At Hackmatack, we're big advocates of sustainable and regenerative processes (and transforming ourselves while keeping our roots😉) so we think the name is still just as fitting, 50+ years later!

Always...Patsy Cline (2019)

All Shook Up! (2018)

Dial M for Murder (2018)

We look forward to seeing you at the barn this summer. Come bring a picnic and see a show; swing by for a Sunday bluegrass jam, or pop over for a cup of coffee with the Bison (although, they prefer lattes).
