Hi everyone,
Wow, next Tuesday will be our final "get acquainted" session for the movements we haven't seen yet. We've not only gotten acquainted with all of the others, we've made real progress on each of them. We're beginning to sound like a real ensemble, and the most exciting thing is that you're recognizing Mozart's musical language. That means you'll find these final movements somehow familiar. And THAT means that after next Tuesday's rehearsal, we'll be moving into the business of musicality, shaping his phrases and uncovering the emotional intent of each movement.
It's vital that you each have a sharpened pencil in your hand, because you'll be doing lots of marking: reminders of the specific pronunciation of the trickier words, noting the meaning of the most important words in order to express them in our tone, putting breath marks in places we haven't made clear yet, and maybe (if you still haven't gotten the message), writing "COPIES UP" at the top of every single page!
Now is when you'll decide how to insert movements 15 and 16 between 11and 12. Some singers prefer to go to a print shop for them to spiral bind the whole work, moving those two appendices into their new positions; others will simply write the page numbers they must turn to, back and forth. What do you think, does your own choice reveal a personality type?
You're working extremely hard, and it's certainly paying off!
My previous two columns have been very long and detailed, so I'm giving you a break this week! I leave early in the morning to drive way up to Camano Island in Northern Washington for a funeral, heading back on Sunday. I need to turn in. Lucky you, not such a long lecture this time!
Next week's work: mvts. 15, 16, 12, 13, and 14.
Please take care of yourselves, OK?
