God's Love Heals the Soul, Military Chaplains Agree

Col. Steven Patrick "Pat" McCain, command chaplain for Pacific Air Forces, which covers "52 percent of the earth's surface ... from Hollywood to Bollywood," works with chaplains to help meet the spiritual needs of U.S. Air Force personnel and their families.
Before becoming a chaplain, McCain was a local pastor whose parishioners were the first people to encourage him to consider the military. He is a clergy member of the   New Mexico Conference.
"There was nothing in me that wanted to join the military. That did not appeal to me at all," McCain said. "Over a period of almost seven years, God really began speaking to me through the parishioners.
"I had a distinct calling in my soul to go into the pastoral ministries. That's why I pursued that calling for seven years. And in that time, I had another specific calling to the military, and it was as real and as vibrant as that first calling."
McCain said he loves being with people, especially those who are young and unchurched, as they figure out where God is working in their lives. "It's a privilege to walk with people on their spiritual journey.

Our Poor, Lonely, Little ERT Trailer

Due to the generosity of FUMC-Los Alamos and to the hard work of members of Asbury UMC-ABQ, we have a trailer equipped and ready to respond to disasters in the New Mexico Conference (or anywhere we are asked to go).  It is part of the UMCOR Mission and the mission of Early Response Teams(ERT's) to "Provide a Caring Christian Presence in the Aftermath of Disaster". Sadly, we have no one trained to be part of an ERT, so the trailer has nowhere to go, even if it needed to.
We will offer an ERT training on Saturday, June 24th, 8 am - 5 pm at Asbury UMC-ABQ, so that we can take our trailer and our presence to where it is needed. The first 15 persons will have their fees waived as part of this introductory course. If you would like to be part of an ERT, please contact:
  • Hap Escue, 505-453-2800
  • Dru Kuntz, 505-265-1819, or
  • Rev. Vernon Baker, 505-822-8828

Religion and Race Announces 2017 CORR Action Fund Grant

The General Commission on Religion and Race (GCORR), The United Methodist Church's racial justice agency, announced that the CORR Action Fund (CAF) will be releasing the United States Program Grants for 2017-2020 with $750,000 in available funding. Applications will be accepted starting May of 2017 with a deadline of August 2017.
GCORR is seeking to fund innovative and bold initiatives that will support vital conversations about race, cultural diversity, xenophobia, and systemic equity.
UMC churches and other UMC entities in the United States are invited to apply for funding to disrupt racism and xenophobia by working with a community partner or alliance to:
  • Identify and change at least one racist and/or xenophobic system, policy, or practice in the wider community.
  • Engage UMC people with diverse community partners in frequent vital conversations about racism and xenophobia.
  • Build understanding and trusting relationships among diverse people in the wider community.

Native American Sunday is April 30th.

Supporting the Ministry of Christ Among Native People
Most Americans today recognize that the history following the arrival of the large canoes bore little resemblance to the one all Christians identify as Creator. That's why the people of The United Methodist Church, Native and non-Native, are creating a new history. Through Native American Ministries Sunday, we're able to equip and empower Native American pastors, congregations and seminary students to do what only they can do: authentically worship and serve Jesus.
As a member of The United Methodist Church, your gift, on this day, equips Native congregations like the NMAC Four Corners Native American Ministry, New York's Onondaga Nation UMC and Nebraska's Native American Sacred Winds congregation to worship and serve as only they can.
