Bernalillo UMC Supports local EMT's
Submitted by Rev. Ron Komatz
Bernalillo UMC toy drive

Supporting local police or sheriff departments with stuffed animals for use in comforting children they find in distress is not an unusual mission project.  But, BUMC recently discovered that their local fire department does not share in these donated toys, whereas their EMT's are frequently on the front line with children when responding to accidents, or fire calls.  To meet this need, members of BUMC collected over three dozen stuffed animals for use by the Bernalillo Fire Department EMT's.  The photo shows BUMC members presenting Fire Chief Mike Carroll  stuffed toys for his crew to use with traumatized children.      Discipleship Ministries - Church Planting Report

A Discipleship Ministries report celebrating the success of new United Methodist faith communities also includes a plan to return The United Methodist Church to "our legacy as innovators and pathfinders for Christ" by planting a church every day in the United States.
The report,  The State of United Methodist Church Planting in the United States, was produced by New Church Starts (Path 1), a Discipleship Ministries unit that supports church planters in local congregations, districts and annual conferences who are creating new places for new people.
"United Methodism was once the fastest-growing and most innovative Christian tradition in the United States," the report says. "We want to reclaim the habit of planting a church a day in the United States and return to our legacy as innovators and pathfinders for Christ.
"The scope of our work ranges from working with new faith communities that may become chartered churches, multi-site campuses, church within churches and new fresh expressions of faith. We are equipping both laity and clergy to start new faith communities. Path 1 will continue to convene conversations with various constituencies to encourage collaboration and shared learning," the report says.
In the current quadrennium, Path 1 expects to see more impact from millennials, multi-ethnic communities and bi-vocational leaders and will "resource the spectrum of strategies and models, paying special attention to fan the flames where the Holy Spirit is already at work," the report says.

National Meeting of the United Methodist Men

One thousand men are expected to come together for worship, workshops, service projects and fellowship at the National Gathering of United Methodist Men on July 7 and 8. Held at St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Indianapolis, Indiana, the event will inspire attendees to embrace new possibilities for ministry and discipleship.
"This is not an event to just have a good time and learn things - it will change your life and change the lives of people around you," said Gil Hanke, general secretary of the General Commission on United Methodist Men (GCUMM). "This gathering challenges men to change their behavior, encouraging them to become more Christ-like in their daily lives. Men will be transformed into a more disciplined disciple."
Occurring every four years since the early 1900s, this is the twelfth national gathering. Speakers will include:
Bishop Jonathan Holston, resident bishop of the South Carolina Annual Conference
Bishop James Swanson, president of GCUMM and resident bishop of the Mississippi Annual Conference
Shan Foster, director of Men End Domestic Violence (MEND)
Dr. Kevin Watson, assistant professor of Wesleyan and Methodist Studies at Candler School of Theology
The event theme, "Discipleship: The Contact Sport," will encourage community. "We are not a single soul in Christianity. We are connected to people we know and people we don't know. Without contact, without reaching out and working with and interacting with other people, discipleship doesn't happen," explained Hanke.
Further details, including recommended lodging options and an online registration form, are available at UMMGathering.org. Registration is $99 through April 1 and includes a complimentary t-shirt. After April 1, the fee increases to $129.
