Roselie Johnston, Ministry/Program Coordinator

Hello everyone!  I am honored and excited to be part of the New Mexico Conference team. I grew up in the NMAC as a P.K.  Rev. Marty Singleterry (retired, now serving St. Peter Lutheran Church in Carlsbad) is my mother.  I am an eighth generation Methodist and have been working in program ministry at the local church level for more than twenty years.  In addition to the Conference Ministry and Program Coordinator, I continue to work part time at St. Stephen's UMC as Director of Solid Grounds Coffeehouse.  I care deeply about the work of the Church and look forward to serving with you as part of the NMAC.

Santa Fe Protest on Social Justice Issues in our State

From the New Mexico Conference of Churches
by Kay Huggins, Interim Executive Director, New Mexico Conference of Churches
It was a beautiful fall day in Santa Fe...but the beauty was not the charm of the city. Rather, yesterday, the beauty at the Roundhouse radiated across the rich variety of Christians gathered to demonstrate their moral solidarity regarding a wide range of issues facing our state. Speaker after speaker rose to address issue after issue... at the heart of all the speeches was the implicit prayer: help us govern better. Speakers affirmed - and the assembled Amen-ed - the desire to be just, to create a state government that works for all New Mexicans, to honor the gift of life in all its forms and to respectfully create space for God's grace and judgment to work within our state. This was the day of Moral Action in Santa Fe...and it was beautiful.
Within a few short weeks, a special session will be called to deal with the budgetary issues from the last fiscal year as well as the current budget. It is a time of crisis --- and for such a time, your voice of calm, reasoned, faithful morality has a purpose. A word spoken by you might prevent the budget being balanced on the backs of the youngest, the weakest, the most frail and the least of our New Mexican family.

'Bridge Events' Connect Churches and Neighbors
D oes your church include members who are involved in activities outside the church: runners, cyclists, soccer-baseball-football moms/dads?  Find ways to serve in the "P-Free Zone".
Vilonia UMC Back to School Grub
By Amy Forbus
A safety fair. A back-to-school bash. A cooling station at an outdoor festival.
Each of these events could be sponsored by any group or organization. So what difference does it make when a church is behind the effort?
With planning and prayer, it begins to build a bridge of relationship between the church and its community.
The concept of "bridge events" has gained traction since being highlighted in the 2013 book Get Their Name: Grow Your Church by Building Relationships. Each attendee of this spring's  Grow By One Summit sponsored by the Arkansas Conference Center for Vitality received a copy of the book, and one of its co-authors, Kay Kotan, served as the keynote speaker.
Those who have read the book or who attended the summit learned that congregations create bridge events as "P-Free Zones": no preaching, no prayers, no pressure, no pocketbooks. Authentic relationships take time, so bridge events seek to lay a foundation for effective faith sharing.
