MEET THE SLC WINNER!
Last week we had the distinct pleasure of awarding our 2021 Summer Learning Challenge (SLC) winner with her prize. Jimena is a 2nd grade Orion Alternative Elementary School student. She and her parents are delighted to have won the Summer Learning Challenge top prize: a $1,000 education scholarship! Library Director, Derek Wolfgram bestowed the certificate and Friends of the Redwood City Library President, Mary, was there to congratulate Jimena too.

Our annual Summer Learning Challenge is a proven way to combat Summer Slide and inspire a love of reading in children. Numerous studies have shown that summer programs at libraries help ensure that school children retain reading and learning skills over the break. The program and many Library events throughout the year are generously funded by Friends of the Redwood City Library.
GOOD NEWS FROM OUR ESL GROUP
Congratulations are also in order to our ESL Conversation Group student Prabha on her United States citizenship! Prabha joined the library's ESL conversation group in May to improve her English speaking and listening skills. Recently, Prabha passed her U.S. citizenship test, and she credits her participation in our conversation class as helping to build her confidence in speaking English. Our group leaders are absolutely delighted to witness Prabha's amazing transformation as an English language speaker. With her increased confidence, she has become more outgoing, chatty, proficient and willing to take risks when learning English. She is an actively engaged and committed student who continues to join our twice weekly meeting on Zoom. Learning a language is a journey, and we are delighted Prabha continues to take advantage of the library's ESL group to continuously improve her English.

WELCOME BACK ON OCTOBER 11
Did you hear the news? On October 11, we are excited to offer our community expanded library hours and services. In addition to returning to our pre-COVID hours, we are bringing back many of our signature services. These include Project READ, the Downtown Library Teen Center and teen room at Redwood Shores Branch Library, several of the early childhood learning interactives, and study rooms. With the health and safety of employees and the public a top priority, indoor in-person public programs and events where groups gather will continue to be postponed until January 2022. Visit our webpage for more information.
