On Monday, October 20th, the elegant ballroom at Salvatore's was as energetic as ever as we celebrated with nearly 500 members, investors, and community leaders who gathered for The Event Celebrating Business Excellence 2025. The evening unfolded as a testament to the resilience and innovation driving our Western New York business community forward.

Each honoree that evening was humble and inspiring with their own personal acknowledgment of thanks for the award they received. Our Honorees included:

  • Business of the Year: Kelton Enterprises, LLC
  • Commitment to Excellence: Lippes Mathias LLP
  • Family-Owned Business Award: Walsh Insurance
  • Stewardship Award: The Summit Center
  • Woman of Distinction: Lynne Marie Finn, Broadleaf Results

David and Allanna Beaton of Kelton Enterprises, our Business of the Year recipients, are the proud owners of 47 Tim Hortons, currently employing over 1,100 people across the Western New York community, making them the largest franchisee in the state. Their dedication and success serve as a shining example for aspiring entrepreneurs. They closed the evening by providing thanks to so many people that have helped them along the way such as Mike Dolan, a partner with Tronconi Segarra and Associates who have served as their accounting firm, and Brian Donovan the founder of EBC who has been providing payroll services for them since day one, but it was the sincere thanks to their all-female management team that were in attendance that received the most thunderous applause.

The evening also served as the official graduation of our 2025 Emerging Business Leaders' class. This program, which saw the participation of forty young professionals, was a platform for them to hone their professional skills and contribute to the community. They met once a month, engaging in workshops and networking events, and their graduation marks the continuation of their journey as future leaders in our business community. We are now accepting applicants for our 2026 program, and space is limited. Please register at Amherst.org.

We must extend our deepest thanks to Salvatore's for their flawless execution that night, the reviews from our guests who have attended over the years, felt this was by far the smoothest the food portion has ever run. Also, to our sponsors, including our headline sponsor M&T Bank and Lippes Mathias, ESC, and Highmark WNY, their generous support makes these nights possible. If you missed it, photos and highlights are up on our website—relive the joy!

Sign-ups to volunteer for Child & Family Services' Adopt-a-Family 2025 have begun. Whether it’s greeting donors during their gift drop-off, helping sort through donations or packing up a family’s holiday gifts for delivery, they need your help!

Without their generous and kind-hearted volunteers, their Adopt-a-Family Program would not be able to serve as many individuals and families as they do! This program provides families served by Child & Family Services with the resources they need to experience the magic of the holiday season and jumpstart the new year.

The Adopt-a-Family workshop is open December 8-19, Monday-Friday. Each day, two shifts are available to choose from: 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

They are happy to accept volunteer groups or individuals! If interested in participating in this program, please email adoptafamily@cfsbny.org with your preferred shift, date and group size.

We have a new Volunteer Opportunities page on the Chamber website! Learn about our nonprofit members and how you can give back by visiting the web page here.

Have You Cleaned Out Your Medicine Cabinet Recently?

It’s a pretty good chance that if you open up your medicine cabinet, you’ll find some old prescription bottles or leftover medication that “might come in handy someday.” In fact, those medications may have expired and may cause more harm than you realize.

It’s a good idea to occasionally take some time to clear out your medicine cabinet.

Independent Health’s Pharmacy team offers these easy tips to help you get started in cleaning your medicine cabinet and making sure your medications stay fresh:

1.       Check the dates. Discard any medications or item that are past the expiration dates. Many medications, vitamins and ointments lose their effectiveness after the expiration date.

2.       For prescriptions, follow the one-year cut-off rule. Get rid of any prescription medications that are more than one year old.

3.       The bathroom cabinet is not the best place to store medication. The temperature and humidity changes that take place while the shower is running can lower the strength of your medication. Keep medications in a cool dry place, away from children. Consider placing your medications in your bedroom dresser or a lock box in your closet.

Be careful about how you dispose of unused medicines. Your local pharmacy, hospital or police department may be able to assist in disposing of medication in a safe manner. Due to the potential harm to the environment, you should not flush most medications down the toilet. Before you do, check the FDA flush list to see if you can flush it down the toilet. If it’s not on the flush list, you should follow these instructions to discard the medicine in your trash at home.

Each community has drop-off locations for unused and expired medications; check this website for a location near you. In addition, twice a year – in April and October- there’s an event called National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Sites are added at different times, so check back if you don’t see any local sites listed. The website also includes year-round drop-off locations for convenience.

Staffed by pharmacists, this event gives people the chance to properly dispose of their expired, unwanted or unused medications. A complete list of locations that will be serving as collection sites in Western New York is posted on the DEA’s website.
