Congratulations

Congratulations to Justice William H. Hendsbee, former Law Society of Alberta President, and Justice Sony Ahluwalia, former Bencher, who have been appointed as Justices of the Alberta Court of Justice on May 23, 2024.


Justice Hendsbee, previously a partner at Cummings Andrews Mackay LLP, served as a Bencher of the Law Society of Alberta from 2018 to 2024, including serving as President from 2023 to 2024.


Justice Hendsbee also served as President of the Edmonton Bar Association and as President of the Alberta Civil Trial Lawyers Association (ACTLA). He has volunteered his time to chair and speak at seminars for both the Legal Education Society of Alberta and ACTLA.


Justice Ahluwalia was born and raised in Uganda and later in London, England, completing his LLB in Canada. Justice Ahluwalia joined the Law Society of Alberta board in 2021. 


For the previous 12 years, Justice Ahluwalia worked as a Crown prosecutor with the provincial government and as an Assistant Chief Crown prosecutor with Alberta Justice in Edmonton. He completed his LLM at Osgoode Hall in Criminal Law and Procedure.


The Law Society would also like to congratulate Justice Monica R. Brown, who was appointed as Justice of the Alberta Court of Justice.

Court of King's Bench Announcements

Fort McMurray Courthouse to Reopen on Monday, May 27


The Fort McMurray courthouse will reopen on Monday, May 27. All hearings in both the Court of Justice and the Court of King’s Bench will proceed as previously scheduled.


Counsel are Now Required to “Leave an Action” in Court Case Management (CCM) 


Effective immediately, counsel are now required to leave an action in CCM if they are no longer a representative of any of the parties on the style of cause.

Legal Assistants are Now Required to Create an Account in Court Case Management (CCM)  


Effective immediately, legal assistant access will be available in CCM. By June 4, 2024, all legal assistants requiring access to CCM must create their own account.
