LA PRESIDENTE 2022

Old Spanish Days Fiesta
August 3 - 7, 2022

Old Spanish Days Fiesta (Fiesta) is one of the oldest and most popular festivals in Santa Barbara. It began in 1924 to celebrate the rebuilding and opening of the Lobero Theatre but has evolved into a beautiful celebration of the city’s heritage, traditions and culture and the Spanish, Mexican, and Native Americans who helped form and build the city.

Fiesta celebrations happen every year in August and the entire Santa Barbara community comes together for five days to celebrate with city-wide dance and music performances, mercados, parades, and much more. One major aspect of Fiesta is the Board member who is chosen each year to preside over and manage the entire event, El Presidente or La Presidente. By her side will be the honorary president and two young dancers chosen as the official ambassadors for Fiesta.

Maria Cabrera is La Presidente 2022. She is a life long community volunteer and has a family history and involvement in Spanish, flamenco, and Mexican folk dancing. She is a 16-year Board member of Old Spanish Days Fiesta and tonight, August 3, at 8:00 pm, she will open the official Fiesta activities with Fiesta Pequeña at the Old Mission Santa Barbara.

This year, OSD Fiesta is celebrating 98 years and the Flamenco Arts Festival congratulates the many volunteers who organize this event and especially, La Presidente, Maria Cabrera, who just happens to be a Board member of the Flamenco Arts Festival.

“Fiesta is a time to just enjoy life being together,” said La Presidente Cabrera whose 2022 theme is “Todos Juntos en Familia” translated: “All Together as a Family”. sbfiesta.org

VIVA LA FIESTA!
DID YOU KNOW?
The United States Postal Service is honoring Mariachi, the traditional music of Mexico, which is deeply rooted in the United States, with a Forever Stamp collection.

Just like flamenco, in recognition of the importance of mariachi music and culture, UNESCO added mariachi to the list of “Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity” in 2011. Learn more about the new USPS Forever Stamps honoring Mariachi.

The Santa Barbara Mariachi Festival was founded by Alberto Pizano (photo) and Salud Carbajal and is held annually in August during OSD Fiesta. Proceeds from this amazing event provide scholarships that further the education of Latino students. The event is on Saturday, August 6, 2022 at the Santa Barbara Bowl.
