WELCOME COACH DAVE McGOWAN
|
COACH DAVE McGOWAN TO JOIN THE SKOKIE FLYERS!
Coach Dave began coaching hockey 30 years ago. He has coached at Wilmette (Mite AA and Squirt AA), Chicago Young Americans (Pee Wee Majors), Team Illinois (Pee Wee Majors), Winnetka, Falcons, Chicago Blues, Barrington, and Lake Forest High School. Coach Dave's teams have won several State Championships and he has former players currently playing in the NHL, NCAA Division 1 & 3, NAHL, USHL & OHL.
Coach Dave's coaching philosophy is to have an environment that encourages athletes to learn and develop on and off the ice rink. His goal is to optimize and impact each individual player and push them out of their comfort zone to improve. Those lucky enough to make Coach Dave's team will need to understand that he runs his teams with rules and strict organization.
Coach Dave is a Director of Sales for Apple in Cupertino, California. He manages his sales people in the same way he manages his hockey players. As a player, Coach Dave played at the AA, AAA, and Juniors levels. He is the father of four amazing children. His 22 year old son currently plays D-III hockey at St. Olaf College in Minnesota.

Our Flyers Bantam team finished in 2nd Place in NIHL. The Flyers had an impressive 7 of its 9 teams make the NIHL Playoff. The Bantams were the only team to make it to the Championship Game and bring home a flag to the Skatium. The names of each member of the team will be embroidered on the banner and it will be raised with other flags displayed in our Main Rink. Congratulations Bantams!

COACH STEVE'S THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
|
THREE HOCKEY THEORIES THAT ARE VERY TRUE...
#1 Two goal leads are the worst lead in hockey
. When teams are competitively matched and one jumps out to an early two goal lead getting that all-important next goal is critical. It either puts the losing team back in the game, or knocks that losing team down and out never to recover getting back in the game.
#2 Good things happen when you get the puck to the net.
You see so many players at all levels of the game try to make that picture-perfect pass or dangle around with the puck, eventually losing it and thwarting any scoring opportunity for his team. Many times the best approach is just putting the puck on net putting the pressure on the goaltender in controlling the rebound and having to keep it away from net crashing players.
#3 When in doubt, get it out.
This is the other side of the coin from Number 2. When you feel the pressure bottled up in your defensive zone and your goalie has had to make a brilliant save or two, on your next opportunity with the puck send it high off the glass, or find a seam and get it out of your zone. In amateur hockey you can still make that line change when being called for icing and that may be your greatest option to alleviate constant pressure in your own zone.
Some final thoughts
....Congratulations to all teams on some great showings during the playoffs this season. Especially to our Bantam AA who brought it to the NIHL finals in Joliet. Although I never enjoyed coaching at the Rink Side in Gurnee, I'm really sad to see it go and feel for the players who call that rink their home who will have to look for a new one. Some of our Flyers and Pilots house teams are doing well in the midst of their respective playoffs in the North Shore Hockey League. And as we turn the corner into spring remember to keep working hard on skill development, but also most importantly keep hockey calm and fun - the way it's supposed to be.

GREAT READ...LEAD LIKE LOUIE
|
LEAD LIKE LOUIE
By Elizabeth Boger, USA Hockey ~
Like any young player, Louie Belpedio looked to the captains of the Miami University hockey team for guidance and leadership. He studied their tendencies and behaviors, and eventually began to develop a leadership style of his own.
Two years later, it's his turn to wear the 'C.'
A junior defenseman for the RedHawks, Belpedio understands what it takes to gain the respect of his teammates. He served as captain for Team USA at the 2014 IIHF Under-18 Men's World Championship, winning gold; and as an alternate captain for the 2016 U.S. National Junior Team, which captured bronze.
Now, with 14 freshmen on the Miami roster, Belpedio has his work cut out for him. With so many underclassmen, head coach Enrico Blasi enlists four rotating assistant captains - a move Belpedio approves of.
"It gives guys a boost of confidence," said Belpedio, a third-round draft pick (80th overall) of the Minnesota Wild. "A letter on your shoulder makes you want to be the best you want to be. But just because I wear a letter doesn't mean I have to be the go-to leadership guy."
He's right. Players don't have to wear a letter to be leaders. Everyone can be a leader and Belpedio offered advice on how to develop leadership skills and put them into action. FULL ARTICLE>>
