I don't know whether James Lane and Steve Constantino wear Chuck Taylor sneakers. I don't know whether they play basketball. Regardless, I am confident that these two Virginia education leaders will maintain the impressive progress begun during the four years that Steve Staples served as Virginia's Superintendent of Public Instruction. I expect that we will reach even higher than before in bringing the best learning experience possible to Virginia students.
Last week Dr. Lane was appointed to the Superintendency, and Dr. Constantino will serve as Virginia's Chief Academic Officer. In his time as Acting Superintendent, Steve Constantino has skillfully balanced the temporary nature of his role with a refusal to sit still. His deep understanding of teaching, learning and leadership along with his commitment to students and to a wide range of stakeholders have provided support for student-centered decision making, deeper learning, and modernized Standards of Accreditation. VASCD is deeply grateful for Dr. Constantino's leadership.
James Lane's track record suggests similar understanding and commitments. He is known as an innovative leader and brings valuable perspectives based on his experience in Virginia school divisions with varying populations and needs. Our congratulations to
Dr. Lane. Best wishes for a smooth transition and here's to four years of forward motion!
