Hello BPA board and families,
This will be the last newsletter of the school year. Look for some updates this summer about the BHS Foundation Golf Auction, which partially benefits our program, but for the most part we are all taking a well deserved break!
In keeping the community updated, we will be stepping down as BPA Boosters copresidents and returning to our roles in communications. I (Rachel) will continue in my role as Comms Chair, working with the team who keeps parents informed via the newsletter, website, publicity and social media, and reminds. Jeannette will also continue to focus on supporting and growing the BPA social media platforms and volunteering for events and performances.
We've had a lot of fun the last two years creating successful events and working with many dedicated volunteers. We are very proud of how we’ve met our fundraising goals with very low expenses during a very unpredictable time in history -- and created community-building fundraising events that were accessible, inclusive, and fun. Most of all--we’re proud of getting so many parents involved to support this wonderful program. Your kids appreciate it even though they might not ever let you know!! Like us, many of you work full time jobs outside the home in addition to your volunteer commitment. Your time is a gift to this program and we thank you!
We especially want to give thanks to the parents who are graduating from the program:
- Page Abrahamson, Orchestra rep
- Mishelle Jin, Jazz Band Rep (Golden Note Volunteer Award winner)
- Russ and Carol Laurier, sponsorship coordinators (Mara Lim Award winner)
- Rhenda Meiser, BPA Publicity
- Lori and Stuart Onstad, Choir Reps (Golden Note Volunteer Award winner)
- Ann Selznick, Student directory
- Amanda Workman, Website coordinator (Golden Note Volunteer Award winner)
Have a wonderful summer!
--Rachel and Jeannette

Jazz Band audition information
Auditions for next year's jazz bands will be held the first week of school. Auditions for Big Band and Jazz Lab will be held at the beginning of next year. If students are interested in auditioning, they can start preparing and practicing from this list of material over the summer. Audition material will be chosen from this list in addition to scales. All students are expected to learn their major, minor, and dominant scales, be able to improvise over the play-alongs, and be able to play through the bebop melodies. Please go over the material thoroughly and email Mr. Gillespie with any questions.
Incoming student? Contact band director Jay Gillespie for audition information.

Treble Choir Field Trip
The rain couldn’t stop them! Congratulations to Treble Choir for a wonderful singing tour of Seattle. One of their stops was at Merrill Gardens. A resident there said it was the most positive thing that had happened there in three years and wanted to make a donation to Ballard Performing Arts! Pike Place Market was a hit with the students; they really enjoyed themselves. A special thank you to all the parent driver volunteers. We couldn’t have done this without you!

Vocal Jazz Solo Night
The Black Box Theater was filled with amazing jazz music. The Ev Stern trio performed and accompanied all the soloists. And we had a special treat from Mr. Nguyen, who played a jazz piano solo. Thank you Vocal Jazz students for your hard work and dedication to jazz.

Vocal Jazz and Band at Ballard FC
Congratulations to Vocal Jazz and many of the BHS Band students who performed at Ballard FC’s match on Friday. Vocal Jazz sang the national anthem and the Drumline performed at halftime. As supporters were leaving the match, the Brass Band performed as well. Thank you to all the performers for making the event special.
NY Trip Refunds for Seniors
We are very happy to announce that we have reached an agreement with our travel partner Sechrist Travel, and they will be sending us a refund check to cover senior students and chaperones shortly. Jill and Mike Hansen (BPAB Treasurers) will be mailing checks to your home addresses as soon as we have the funds from the travel agent. It’s been a difficult road to navigate, and we thank you immensely for your patience and understanding as we’ve navigated this challenging situation!

Orchestra
Orchestra Placement Auditions
Students that want to audition for Symphonic or Chamber Orchestra need to contact Ms. Fortune at eafortune@seattleschools.org to set up a time for an online audition (on Teams or Zoom). Students should be prepared to play something of their choice that demonstrates their abilities and also engage in a conversation about their skills and experience. Otherwise, sign up for Concert Orchestra.

Check out this amazing video from Robert Eaglestaff Marching Band!
John Agular, the band director of one of our feeder schools, Robert Eagle Staff Middle School, has been hard at work, as usual, providing his students with incredible opportunities.
Last week, the band released their first single, entitled “SOAR”, with Tampa-based Billboard charting rapper Marlon Wood aka Bruce Wayne/Dark Knight. The track, inspired by the school’s motto of Scholars who Show Ownership, Academic focus, and Respect and Responsibility, is an anthem centered around the themes of hope, motivation, pride, and perseverance, particularly after the many hardships the world had endured the past two years. The song features the talents of Mr. Wood, the 130-piece Eagle Staff Marching Ravens, New York-based singer Alexandra Fresquez, and RESMS instructional assistant Philip Durant aka Philly Alto. The RESMS Marching Band features alum and Ballard rising senior Simon Skonieczny as drum major.
Eighth grade musicians coming to Ballard--we’re excited to have you!
