Seventh Annual 2020 Women on Boards
Los Angeles/Orange County 2018
The National Conversation On Board Diversity
|
|
At our 2020 Women on Boards luncheon November 14 (with 700 men and women at the Music Center.) Our LA/OC event was the largest of 23 cities in the National Conversation on Board Diversity, with 5,000 total attendance nationwide. Outstanding keynote panel members were Patti Wagner, CEO of Southern California Gas; Diana Ingram, on board of Rexford REIT, and Xavier Gutierrez, managing partner of Clearlake private equity firm.
Co-chairs Renee Fraser and Betsy Berkhemer-Credaire emceed the panel and announced the latest 2018 national statistics from 2020 Women on Boards: Among the Russell 3000 companies in 2018, women hold 17.7% of the board seats, up from 16.0% over last year (2017).
In California, among the 436 Russell 3000 companies headquartered here, women hold 17.3% of the board seats, a slight increase from 15.6% in 2017.
Here are some public corporations in SoCal with more than 20% women directors: AECOM, CBRE, Edison International, KB Home, Mattel, PS Business Parks, Sempra Energy, Staar Surgical, Teledyne Technologies, Walt Disney Co., Edwards Life Sciences, RGP (Resources Global). 2020 Women on Board ranks these companies as "W" for "Winning."
And thank you to 45 corporate directors who facilitated round table discussions to coach attendees about navigating their careers toward corporate boards.
Next year's luncheon date: either Wed., November 20 or Thu., November 21, 2019, depending upon the LA Opera schedule at the Music Center

California passed SB 826 – first law in the country to require more women directors on public company boards.
Sponsored by the National Association of Women Business Owners of California (NAWBO-CA) and authored by State Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson of Santa Barbara, SB 826 was signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown on September 30. It had been passed by the Senate May 31 and Assembly August 30, after six tough committee hearings (three in each house): Banking, Judiciary and Appropriations. SB 826 was originated by Betsy Berkhemer-Credaire, statewide board-member of NAWBO-CA, collaborating with Cristina Rose and Billie Greer.
This first such law in U.S. history requires at least one woman director on every public company board headquartered in the state by the end of 2019; and by the end of 2021, requires two more women on boards with six or more directors. In 2019, this could mean from 105 to 180 new seats added to boards of companies that currently have no women; and in 2021, there could be from 600 to 700 more seats for women directors on boards of corporations headquartered in California (regardless where the company is incorporated.)

Farewell to Cris Credaire
With great sadness this year, we share that Cris Credaire, Betsy's husband for 35 years, died suddenly of a heart attack on Labor Day. She thanks all of you for your good wishes at the holidays. So that young people can learn to fly airplanes, like Cris and Betsy did, a memorial fund has been established in the name of Cris Credaire at the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.
