Dear GMEA Members and Friends,

Another school year has come to a close and as we turn the page, I want to take a moment to recognize all that you’ve accomplished and to wish you well as you head into a well-earned summer break. I’d also like to offer a special congratulations to those members who are retiring at the end of this year. Thank you for the lasting impact you’ve had on your students, your programs, and our profession.

Across Georgia, the work of our members continues to remind us what makes this association strong. Whether in your classrooms, on the stage, or out in your communities, your commitment to your students is evident. What you do each day, often without much recognition, is what truly drives the success we celebrate as an organization.

GMEA works because of its people! The willingness to share, support, and lead keeps us moving forward, and every member plays a part in that. I so appreciate our state leaders, district and division officers, event coordinators, and the GMEA staff for the work that happens behind the scenes. Speaking of the staff, I’m proud to be part of this team and grateful for the work we do each day to serve our members.

Please take time to step away and recharge this summer. Spend time with family and friends, get some rest, and, if you can, reconnect with the reasons you got into teaching in the first place.

Thank you for what you do and for the role you play in GMEA. I appreciate the opportunity to serve alongside you and look forward to what lies ahead.

Wishing you a restful summer.

D. Alan Fowler, Executive Director

Virginia Oliver-Lentz Memorial Scholarship Awarded

The Georgia Music Educators Association is proud to announce the inaugural recipient of the Virginia Oliver-Lentz Memorial Scholarship, established to honor the legacy and impact of Virginia "Ginny" Oliver-Lentz, GMEA President, 1983-85. This $1,000 scholarship supports a graduating female senior from a Georgia public high school who plans to pursue a degree in instrumental music education (band) at a Georgia public college or university.

The scholarship recognizes both academic achievement and demonstrated excellence and involvement in music. Funded through a generous gift from Mrs. Lentz’s estate, along with contributions from her colleagues and friends, the scholarship will be awarded annually over a ten-year period.

GMEA is pleased to congratulate Evelynn N. Little, from Dawson County High School as the first recipient of this honor. Evelynn’s accomplishments and commitment to music education exemplify the purpose of this scholarship and the legacy of Ginny Lentz. Applications for the Virginia Oliver-Lentz Memorial Scholarship will be available next winter/spring through the GMEA website.
