Congratulations to Anna Giulione
this year's recipient of
The Myeloma Canada
Marion State Memorial Nursing Award
May 10th – 16th is National Nursing Week. It’s an important opportunity to celebrate and pay tribute to all nurses in Canada, and around the world, for their incredible work. Now more than ever, we wish to express our admiration and gratitude for all they do. Their dedication, compassion and unwavering strength give all of us, wherever we are in the world, the support we need to get through these difficult times.

On May 12th, as we remember Florence Nightingale's birthday, it’s also a tradition for us at Myeloma Canada to introduce the recipient of the Myeloma Canada Marion State Memorial Nursing Award. This prestigious award recognizes Canadian nurses who demonstrate excellence in nursing through their leadership, teamwork, passion, and commitment to advancing care for myeloma patients.
It’s our great pleasure to present Anna Giulione, Clinical Research Nurse (Multiple Myeloma) at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary, AB with the 2022 Myeloma Canada Marion State Memorial Nursing Award.
Anna, we are proud to present you with this prestigious award in recognition of the amazing work you have done and continue to do for the Albertan and Canadian myeloma community.

Anna has had a fascinating nursing career which began at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal (QC) in 1985. She has worked as a medical/surgical nurse, an Emergency Department Nurse, Interim Head/Assistant Head Nurse, an Underwriter and Field Nurse in the insurance industry, Nurse Adjudicator/Consultant with the Canadian Embassy in Paris, School Nurse at the Frankfurt International, Site Management Associate II at PRA International in Mannheim and currently, she is the Clinical Research Nurse at the Tom Baker Cancer Center in Calgary.

Anna has lived in Montreal, QC; London, ON; Paris, France; Frankfurt, Germany; and now, Calgary, AB.
Anna Giulione
Anna started working with the Tom Baker Cancer Centre’s Multiple Myeloma Clinical Trials Group in 2014, where, in her words, she was “fortunate to join the best doctors and scientists in the field, Dr Paola Neri and Dr Nizar Bahlis, who are very passionate about myeloma”, and mentored and inspired her. Motivated by their passion, Anna wanted to learn all she could about myeloma and how to help best care for, and support, patients and their caregivers in their journeys with the disease. Anna’s specialty focus is the care of research participants for Hematology-Oncology clinical research studies. Her knowledge encompasses Phase I, II and III clinical trials for newly diagnosed and relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma.

In 2016 at a Myeloma Canada patient support conference, Anna met Aldo Del Co, the late Co-founder of Myeloma Canada and she was moved by his energy and passion. Later, she was invited to participate at other Myeloma Canada meetings, including the annual Myeloma Canada Scientific Roundtable and advisory board discussions.
In 2017, Anna was approached by a Southern Alberta Myeloma Patient Society (SAMPS) support group member to give a presentation on clinical trials. From there, she was asked to be the Nurse Liaison between SAMPS members, patients, and myeloma physicians at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre. She is extremely proud to be part of SAMPS as well as to fundraise for myeloma research.
We’re not the only ones who’ve noticed and appreciate all Anna does for our myeloma community:
“Anna Giulione is our clinical trial nurse at the Tom Baker Cancer Center in Calgary. She has been working with Dr Bahlis and myself for the past 8 years in the myeloma clinic and undoubtably she is one of the best nurses we have ever worked with. She is knowledgeable, dedicated, caring and reliable. At the core of her practice are high clinical standards of care, amazing empathy and dedication toward our patients. Even in the most busy and hectic environments she provides outstanding medical care.

Anna provides meticulous and loving care to our myeloma patients. She always listens to them, understanding where they are coming from while addressing their concerns, and always attempts to help, even when things seem impossible. Her smile and positive attitude give patients a sense of comfort and make them feel confident they will be cared for. Our patients are extremely grateful to her and value her care tremendously, as we certainly do! Testimonies to her dedication are the numerous letters of appreciations and messages of thanks that she receives from our patients on a regular basis.

Anna has been also an effective advocate for our myeloma patients and highly engaged with the myeloma community. Locally she is an active member of the board of directors of the Southern Alberta Myeloma Patient Society (SAMPS) and at the national level she is fully engaged with Myeloma Canada. She understands the needs of our patients and she is their voice in the effort to discuss concerns that need to be addressed.

Thank you, Anna, we are so blessed to have you as part of our team. Your hard work makes a difference every day for our myeloma patients.”
– Dr Bahlis and Dr Neri
Tom Baker Cancer Center, Calgary
Every day Anna demonstrates leadership, teamwork, enthusiasm and a passion for sharing information, which is why patients love her. She always has time to ensure that they understand their treatments and answer any of their questions. She is very approachable and knowledgeable, with a great sense of humour and a compassionate soul. She and her colleagues at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre love to participate in fundraising events and help out whenever they can, with anything they can.

I am so happy to see Anna’s efforts appreciated with the Myeloma Canada Marion State Memorial Nursing Award. She is our Rock Star and no one deserves it more! Anna is so awesome, I could go on ad nauseum!”

The Myeloma Canada Marion State Memorial Nursing Award
The Myeloma Canada Marion State Memorial Nursing Award was created in 2012 in honour of Marion State and her extraordinary contributions to the Canadian myeloma community. Marion, a nurse, was diagnosed with myeloma in 1996. Two years later, she founded the Toronto & District Multiple Myeloma Support Group, the first myeloma patient group in Canada – providing invaluable support to myeloma patients across the country.

In addition to being a passionate advocate, Marion also helped establish several support groups cross Canada, laying the foundation for today’s Myeloma Canada Support Group Network which we’re proud to say has grown to 44 groups across the country.
