Bringing the multicultural, creative spirit of Ezra Jack Keats
into children's lives and literature
February 2016
Dear Friends,
We can't stop celebrating!
There’s the 2016 EJK Book Award, whose winners have just been announced!. Each year I am gratified all over again when this award that means so much to us is met with such excitement. I look forward to spending time with this group of talented new writers and illustrators in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, in April.
Then there’s African-American History Month. Take a look at the new additions to our recommended picture books, which tell stories we all need to know.
100 Days of Ezra
Let us know about your plans for Ezra’s100th and we’ll add it to our calendar! Then use our Birthday Kit to make it a blast and share your celebration with us!
You’ll hear from Don Tate, New Writer for Poet: The Remarkable Story of George Moses Horton, and Phoebe Wahl, New Illustrator for Sonya’s Chickens, and much more in days to come!
You’ve come up with a great idea, and you want your proposal to pop! Ask: What do kids love most about Keats? Boil it down to a few words. That’s the spirit you want your proposal to convey.
Speaking of Keats, a reminder to put Ezra's 100th on your calendar. In the classroom or living room, find a moment to say with your kids, "Happy birthday, Ezra!" Such a small gesture, and a loving tribute.
