Why you should write your college essay this summer (and how we can help)

If we could offer students and families only one piece of advice about writing the personal statement, it would be to get it done during the summer. Below are three reasons why you should complete your personal statement this summer and additional resources for getting it done.

Reason 1. Summer offers you a block of time to research, brainstorm, write and revise. We know that by now, most of your summer plans have been worked out. But the weeks of July and August will allow you ample time to research essays that worked, explore and develop several topics, begin drafting and revise, revise, revise. The best college essays we supported evolved over about eight weeks; they were not written in a heart-pounding sweat during the week leading up to the application deadline.

Reason 2. You won’t be distracted by mountains of schoolwork. Trust us: it will be tough to brainstorm essay topics on September 19 when your first AP Biology test is on September 21. Besides, you’ve got plenty of time before November 1 (the Early Decision deadline), right? Don’t kid yourself thinking that your English teacher wouldn’t dream of assigning a Wuthering Heights paper due October 25. Getting the essay written during the summer means that your time and energy won’t be competing with schoolwork.

Reason 3. You will take some of the pressure off of the first half of senior year. First semester seniors, know this: high school teachers are keen to get as much work out of you as possible before the end of the calendar year. Your essay/s and the rest of the application are time-consuming tasks, and you will have to carve out a significant amount of time outside of school, homework, sports, extra-curriculars, work and home responsibilities to get everything done. By spending a couple of hours per week this summer on your essays, you will be happier come fall.

Don’t feel like you need to work on your essays alone. This spring and summer we are offering two online classes about the personal statement. Our parent offering, College Essay: What Parents Should Know and How They Can Help, will be held on June 14 from 7-8 pm. This course will teach parents how they can best support their student moving through the writing process. Registration for the parent class is here.

The student class, Kick Start Your College Essay, will be held on July 10 from 7-8:30 pm. Unlike most college essay lectures, this one includes a 1:1 hour-long session with writing coach Jane Hirschhorn. Registration for the student class is over here.

Congratulations to our students, all of whom will complete another successful school year this month. Some of you will be moving on to high school come fall, and even if you are nervous, you are ready! We wish you all a wonderful summer filled with fun, rest, relaxation and a good book or two. And of course, we wish our high school seniors our sincere congratulations on graduating high school this year and stepping into the next phase of their educational and life journeys.

Celebrating T2 at Newton North

We congratulate the Class of 2023 cohort at Transitioning Together, a Newton North High School program that supports

first-generation college applicants and their families throughout the college search and application process. JBH Tutoring is honored to have helped 34 students with their college essays across the past seven admission cycles.

Later this month, we will present our talk Kickstart Your College Essay to the Class of 2024 cohort. We thank Transitioning Together Director Melissa Hanenberger and Programming Coordinator Jillian Hall for their support of our work.
