TORAH PORTION
Mishpatim [These Are the] Rules
Exodus 21:1−24:18
These are the rules that you shall set before them. - Exodus 21:1

SUMMARY:
* Interpersonal laws ranging from the treatment of slaves to the exhibition of kindness to strangers are listed. (21:1-23:9)
* Cultic laws follow, including the commandment to observe the Sabbatical Year, a repetition of the Sabbath injunction, the first mention of the Three Pilgrimage Festivals, rules of sacrificial offerings, and the prohibition against boiling a kid in its mother's milk. (23:10-19)
* The people assent to the covenant. Moses, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, and seventy elders of Israel ascend the mountain and see God. Moses goes on alone and spends forty days on the mountain. (24:1-18)

Shabbat Candle Lighti n
6:09  p o n Friday, February 21 , 2020

I cannot praise enough Jennifer Seitel and Johanna Kohler and the parents who presented a magnificent and educational Tu B'Shevat Seder on February 2 nd with Rabbi's help. The students were given an assortment of fruits to sample and white wine (apple juice) and red wine (grape juice) to accompany the fruit. Pictures were taken and displayed in an earlier edition of Chi Lights.

Matt Berenson also deserves praise for the Scout Shabbat on Friday, February 7. The event was well coordinated and presented, honoring both the male and female scouts who participated. After the service, Rabbi invited the audience to come up and see a Torah and ask questions which Rabbi answered as only our Rabbi can. This too was quite educational and enjoyable.

This week there is no Religious School or mid-week Hebrew. Religious school resumes Sunday, March 1 and mid-week Hebrew resumes Tuesday, March 3 and Wednesday, March 5.

On March 8, Rabbi will read the Megillah and we will host our Purim Seder. Wine will be served again, as on Tu B'Shevat. March 29.

Sunday, March 15, our ISJL Fellow Julia Kunis will be in Religious School, visiting classes and perhaps leading a service.

I wish y'all a happy and healthy vacation,
Shalom, Bob Huebsch
