TORAH PORTION

Ki Tisa ... When You Take a Census
Exodus 30:11−34:35
The Eternal One spoke to Moses, saying: "When you take a census of the Israelite men according to their army enrollment, each shall pay the Eternal a ransom for himself on being enrolled, that no plague may come upon them through their being enrolled." - Exodus 30:11-12

SUMMARY:
  • Moses takes a census of the Israelites and collects a half-shekel from each person (30:11-16)
  • God tells Moses to construct a water basin and to prepare anointing oil and incense for the ordination of the priests. Bezalel and Oholiab, skilled artisans, are assigned to make objects for the priests and the Tabernacle. (30:17-31:11)
  • The Israelites are instructed to keep Shabbat as a sign of their covenant with God. God gives Moses the two tablets of the Pact. (31:12-18)
  • The Israelites ask Aaron to build them a Golden Calf. Moses implores God not to destroy the people and then breaks the two tablets of the Pact on which the Ten Commandments are written when he sees the idol. God punishes the Israelites by means of a plague. (32:1-35)
  • Moses goes up the mountain with a blank set of tablets for another 40 days so that God will again inscribe the Ten Commandments. Other laws, including the edict to observe the Pilgrimage Festivals, are also revealed. (34:1-28)
  • Moses comes down from the mountain with a radiant face. (34:29-35)

Shabbat Candle Lighti n
6:10 pm on Friday, February 22, 2019

The Torah portion this week is Ki Tisa. This portion has many of the many famous events in it ranging from the forging of the two tablets containing the Ten Commandments to the Golden Calf.  For me, a single verse this week has led to one of the greatest works of art and one of the most tragic misunderstandings
about Jews.

As Moses descends from Mount Sinai after 40 days with God, the Torah says "he radiated with rays of light coming from his face."  Sadly, in the 3rd century, a Latin translation of the Bible rendered the phrase "rays of light" as "horns from his head" leading to the idea that Jews had horns. Indeed, the famous sculpture of Moses by the great medieval sculptor Michelangelo depicts the lawgiver as having horns.

What is so sad is not just the mistranslation and how it was perpetuated for centuries, but it is equally tragic that it takes away from understanding the real intent of the verse. Having just had an amazing experience, Moses was "glowing." In many ways, the modern phrase is used when we speak of a new bride, a woman who is happily pregnant, men and women after great news and
so much more. I believe there are times when we radiate joy and happiness; it is truly a perceptible glow that we have all seen.  Judaism truly celebrates and emphasizes this sense of joy.  Through holidays, prayers, lifecycle events and our tradition we seek to take note of the delights of our daily lives, and having recognized these treasures to embrace them like Moses and
share them that happiness with everyone. I hope we can all see these gems in our world and we too will shine like Moses.

Meet Your Board

We're continuing our Board profile series this week
with our Board president, Brad Seitel!

Originally from Cincinnati, Brad grew up mostly in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Brad and his family moved to Atlanta in 1996 for a job opportunity, and he currently works for a Fortune 100 retailer
in IT, specializing in application development and support.
Brad is a fan of FSU sports, and follows all thing FSU - football, basketball, baseball, softball, and soccer. Pizza is his culinary indulgence - he says he could probably eat it every day
if his health allowed it!

Favorite musicians are Garth Brooks and U2, and he enjoys
pretty much everything from country to rock. Bucket list: |
visit Israel, attend the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, attend the Kentucky Derby, and attend the Masters!

BONUS BRAD TRIVIA:
Brad says if he could choose someone famous to have dinner with,
it would be Derek Jeter, because he was a great player for the NY Yankees and truly embodied being a Yankee. He was loyal
to his team and a leader on and off the field.
