TORAH PORTION
B'reishit
In the Beginning
Genesis 1:1−6:8
When God was about to create heaven and earth, the earth was a chaos, unformed, and on the chaotic waters' face there was darkness. - Genesis 1:1-:2
SUMMARY:
* God creates the world and everything in it in six days and rests on the seventh. (1:1-2:3)
* Adam and Eve are placed in the Garden of Eden, where they eat the forbidden fruit and are subsequently exiled. (2:15-3:24)
* Adam and Eve have two sons, Cain and Abel. Cain kills his brother, Abel. (4:1-24)
* Adam and Eve have another child named Seth. The Torah lists the ten generations from Adam to Noah. (4:25-5:32)

This is the time in the Jewish calendar when we start fresh and look forward to the new year in front of us. The High Holidays are behind us, we have celebrated Sukkot, and will celebrate Simchat Torah this Shabbat.
Our Simchat Torah service Friday and the Religious School celebration Sunday are always major events for our community. We will have both Torahs on display, which is amazing to see; an interactive service where we finish reading the Torah and then restart from the beginning; and a Consecration prayer for our children who are beginning religious school. The Friday service starts at 7:30 pm.
Our fresh start at the Board of Directors level: We are in the process of taking nominations for five Board positions - President, Secretary, Director of Education and two At Large members - which ends this Sunday, October 7. Any member of the congregation can be nominated, so if you feel there is someone who would be a good addition to our Board please send the name and position to
[email protected].
Once nominations are closed, the elections committee will verify that the nominee is eligible per the by-laws, contact each nominee asking them if they are willing to serve and, if they are willing, request a short bio. The candidate list will be completed and ballots for each member family will ready for the Town Hall meeting on October 21. Any member family not at the meeting will have their ballot mailed to them. Ballots will need to be postmark/returned by November 21. The election results will be announced by December 6.
Finally, we will be having a member's Town Hall meeting on October 21 at 12:30 pm in the sanctuary to discuss CNT present and future. As I stated in my Rosh Hashanah remarks, there are many exciting and positive developments that will be announced, so please plan to attend. If you are not a member, but would like to join CNT and be part of our future, please contact Membership at [email protected]
I look forward to seeing you at our Simchat Torah celebration.
