TORAH PORTION
Ki Tavo ... When You Enter [the Land]
Deuteronomy 26:1-29:8
When you enter the land that the Eternal your God is giving you as a heritage, and you possess it and settle in it, you shall take some of every first fruit of the soil, which you harvest from the land that the Eternal your God is giving to you, put it in a basket and go to the place where the Eternal your God will choose to establish the divine name.
- Deuteronomy 26:1-2
SUMMARY:
- The Israelites are instructed to express their gratitude to God for their bountiful harvests and freedom from slavery by tithing ten percent of their crops for the Levite, the stranger, the orphan,
and the widow. (26)
- The people are told to display on large stones God's commandments for all to see. (27:1-8)
- The Levites are to proclaim curses upon those who violate God's commandments. (27:15-26)
- The Israelites are told that if they obey God's mitzvot faithfully, they will receive every blessing imaginable. They are also told that if do not fulfill their brit with God, many curses will descend upon them. (28:1-69)
- Moses reminds the Israelites of the miracles they witnessed in the wilderness and commands them to observe the terms of the covenant so that they may succeed in all that they undertake. (29:1-8)

The High Holidays are approaching. Am I ready? Have I reflected on the past year? Am I satisfied with how it went, or are there things I need to set right before it ends? How about next year? What will it bring, and how can I prepare for it? These are some of the questions that we, as Jews, are asking ourselves. We ponder them individually and as a community. And how about our community? We are tasked with improving it with every passing year. Have we done our part?
I don't have the answers, but I hope that you'll join us as a community as we welcome a sweet new year and contemplate
these questions in repentance, prayer, and charity. The High Holiday service schedule is set, and registration is open. Please act now, and sign up before vacation planning or the simple rush of everyday life lets it slip from your mind. Member seating is complimentary, but registration is required for all.
Our holiday observances begin with Erev Rosh HaShanah at 7:30 in the evening on Sunday, September 29. The service will be followed by an oneg full of sweet desserts and refreshments provided by the Ritual Committee. Services continue at 10:00 on the morning of Monday, September 30 (no afternoon services). Yom Kippur begins with Kol Nidre, including live music, at 8:00 pm on Tuesday, October 8. Continuing at 10:00 am Wednesday, October 9 and throughout the day will be the remainder of the Yom Kippur services, the morning service at 10:00, afternoon discussion at 3:00, Yizkor memorial service at 4:30, the closing service around 5:00, and wrapping up with the pot-luck Community Break-Fast around 6:30.
Sukkot and Simchat Torah follow later in October. Keep an eye out for information about those services. We look forward to seeing you during the High Holidays and throughout the new year.
L'shana tovah,
Rob Goldstein
CNT Vice President
