Deacon Nominees
Summer Bohm
Summer was born and raised in New Bern and is proud to call herself a true NC native. Raised as a Baptist, she met and married her Catholic husband David, who grew up in Catholicism. They quickly decided that Baptist + Catholic = Presbyterian and found a place they could call home at Cary Presbyterian Church in 2009.
Summer has served as a Youth Advisor, Stephen Minister, worked in the Nursery, served as a chaperone for Massanetta and Montreat, and currently serves on the Preschool Ministry board. She is starting her 10th year at Cary Presbyterian Preschool, currently working as the Assistant Director and Assistant Teacher in the Tuesday/Thursday three-year-old class.

David and Summer live in Apex with their 2 ½ children; Matalie (14) a freshman at Apex High, Maxton (16) a Junior at Apex High, and Callie (5) the dog. In her free time, Summer enjoys walking, listening to true crime podcasts, traveling, baking, and attending/volunteering at Maxton and Mattie’s sports activities.

Summer is honored and thankful to be nominated to serve her church family and community.
Melinda Crouse

Melinda and her husband, Todd, have been active members of CPC since 1999. Their son, Nicholas (now 27), was four years old when they joined the church and their daughter, Elizabeth (now 22), was born in 2000 and baptized at CPC the same year.
Melinda has served in various capacities at CPC over the years: Sunday School Teacher (elementary school), Youth Adviser (Christian Adventurers and High School), Confirmation Mentor, Elder and Stephen Minister. While on Session, Melinda organized and headed up the Communications Team, whose mission is to facilitate CPC communications in all forms. After rotating off of Session, Melinda continued working with the Comm-team and during the past seven years helped design and launch two websites and, most recently, the CPC app.

Melinda enjoys spending time with her family and friends, cooking, traveling, gardening, reading and spending time with Todd in their pottery studio. She especially enjoys connecting with others and hearing their stories. A recent empty-nester, Melinda looks forward to having more opportunities to serve and support members of the CPC community.
Linda Oglesby
Linda grew up in Charlotte and moved to Raleigh after graduating from UNC-CH in 1983. She and her husband Boyce moved to Apex in 1989 and have been members of Cary Presbyterian Church since 1995. Married for 36 years, Linda and Boyce have two adult sons, Michael and Sam, both of whom grew up in this church and were confirmed at CPC.
Linda has served in many roles at CPC over the last 27 years, including Sunday School Teacher, VBS Director, Deacon, and Elder. She served on the Nominating Committee that brought Paul and Sarah to CPC. Her passion is pastoral care, having served on the Pastoral Care Team and for many years as a Stephen Minister and Stephen Leader.

Linda enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time with her family at their cabin in the NC mountains. Through this congregation, Linda and her family have formed lasting connections and close friendships. She is honored to be nominated to serve again as a Deacon and looks forward to using her pastoral care skills to serve our congregation in this capacity.
Conniesue Oldham
My husband, Walt, and I joined Cary Presbyterian Church in 1979. Through the years, I have served CPC in many ways: Elder (twice), Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent, Christian Education Committee Chair, Youth Group Advisor, and in Chancel Choir.
I am now retired, but my professional career included NCSU College of Engineering Faculty, Dean of the John E Weems Graduate School at Meredith College, Engineering Advisor at the NC Utilities Commission, and Program Manager at the US Environmental Protection Agency. I currently serve on the NC GreenPower Executive Committee and Board of Directors.

My recent service on the CPC Diaconate has been very rewarding. The CPC Deacons touch so many lives in our congregation, as well as provide outstanding support to each other. I am honored to be asked to serve again as a CPC Deacon.
Nancy Smith
Nancy Carter Smith is a native and life-long resident of North Carolina, born and raised in Hope Mills, NC. She graduated from Saint Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, NC, and went on to a 31.5 year career teaching accounting and other business courses primarily at Hoke County High School in Raeford, NC. After a short “retirement” in the Wilmington area, she moved to Morrisville to be close to her then new granddaughter.
The mother of two, Nancy was married to Henry David Smith for 40 years prior to his passing. As a married couple, they were active members of Raeford Presbyterian Church as well as Carolina Beach Presbyterian Church, teaching adult Sunday School and taking leadership roles within both churches.

In addition to her lifelong dedication to education and striving to positively influence the growth of young people, Nancy has felt called to care for the elderly. Visiting shut-ins, residents of assisted living and those needing a little attention and love is a practice she started in Raeford where she would manicure the fingernails of the residents of the local rest home, much as she did for her own mother during her later years. Nancy has continued her visits to the elderly since moving to the Raleigh area and enjoys hearing their stories and learning from them. She hopes that her visits, in turn, give joy, and she plans to keep it up until she herself is 'elderly'.
Elder Nominees
Valerie Cullen
Valerie grew up in central Massachusetts and was raised in a Congregational church. She is a graduate of UMass Amherst and Clark University. She and her husband Garrett relocated to Cary in 2006. They found their way to CPC by way of the preschool, where their daughter Sylvie (now 18) was enrolled.
Later, their son Gavin (now 14) also attended CPC preschool, and the family started becoming more involved with the church. Valerie officially became a member of CPC in 2018 and has been involved in teaching Elementary Sunday School and Middle School Sunday School at CPC. Valerie works in Global Education at Duke University and enjoys cross-cultural exchange, cooking, hiking, music, and learning new things. She is excited about this opportunity to serve.
Mitzi Rackley
I grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, attending John Knox Presbyterian Church. I graduated from Oklahoma University, then moved to Washington, D.C., where I worked for the federal government in what we called data processing in those early days.
My husband and I were married in Old Presbyterian Meeting House in Alexandria, VA. As our family grew, I became a stay-at-home mom to my two sons and two daughters.

We moved to Cary in 1993, and I joined Cary Presbyterian Church in 2000. Our family has experienced confirmation, a wedding, baptism and a funeral within the church.

As empty nesting loomed, I returned to the workforce as a teacher assistant at Wiley International Magnet School and enjoyed my time there until retirement.
I have participated in church life as a shepherd in the children’s Sunday School, as a Stephen Minister, as a member of the communion preparation team, in a Connections group, on the preschool board, on the community partnership board, and as one of the Kitchen Katz. I am honored to take on another role at Cary Presbyterian Church and serve on Session.
Audrey Sausman
Audrey was born and raised in Aurora, Colorado where she also raised her daughter, Leah Burton, along with extended family. She was a lifelong Lutheran (ELCA) and was baptized and confirmed at St. Mark’s Lutheran in Aurora. After Leah went to college, Audrey met Paul and they married in Estes Park, Colorado in 1994. Audrey and Paul eventually moved to Estes Park and spent a wonderful six years living there.
To be near Leah and the Burton family, they moved to Cary in 2008. They found their home church at Cary Presbyterian initially because of the Burtons, then quickly found that this is where they wanted to worship and establish themselves in the church community. Audrey’s faith strayed for many years, and she began to start connecting again as a member of Shepherd of the Mountains in Estes Park. This connection and her faith became stronger at Cary Presbyterian. Cary Presbyterian ministers and the CPC community have shown Audrey that it is okay to question your faith, and gently find it over many years. The acceptance of ALL people and ALL faiths and beliefs is one of the central reasons that Audrey wants to worship at CPC. She is looking to support that faith and her beliefs and the CPC community by becoming an Elder.

Audrey has served as a Deacon, Communion preparation coordinator, helped with meals for church members, Women’s Bible Study Coordinator, and teaching Yoga classes. Audrey is also a member of the Be The Hands team. Since retiring from a long career in customer service and sales, she has spent most of her volunteer time working with food insecurity issues including a core volunteer at A Place at the Table, Meals on Wheels, and the Summer Food Program.
Matthew Simmons
Matthew was born and raised in Jacksonville, FL as a member of Arlington Presbyterian Church, where he sang in the choir and was ordained as an elder. He met his wife, Kecia, at Georgia Tech before moving to Maryland for Kecia’s graduate school.
When they moved back south to Raleigh, Matthew and Kecia looked for a friendly church family and joined CPC in the spring of 2010. Matthew is a bass in the CPC Chancel Choir and loves going to Worship and Music Conferences at Montreat. In his spare time, Matthew enjoys jogging, hiking, and swimming.

Matthew works for NCDOT, where he is the Deputy Director of Rail Division, responsible for managing the state’s passenger train operations and strategic rail programs. Matthew and Kecia’s son, Elliot, is 14 years old (turning 15 this month).
Ken Wease
Ken is a long-time CPC member who has served as an elder, Stephen Minister and member of the Budget and Finance Committee.
