Off-Premise Wine Accounts for $20 Billion in 2020

Off-premise retail sales for wine accounted for 209 million cases and $20 billion in 2020, according to the latest data from Nielsen. The average price per bottle continued to grow this year with all price tiers north of $11 up double digits. The average price for a 750mL bottle increased to $11.53, while sauvignon blanc and sparkling wines were the top performing varietals by a significant degree.

However, zooming in on the fall, Thanksgiving didn't deliver a huge boost in sales this year. November marked the lowest growth rates for off-premise retail wine since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March. Volume was up 6% for the month and value increased 11%, compared to 10% volume growth and 17% value growth in October.
