Yesterday, the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate reached an agreement on short-term federal government funding through a bipartisan continuing resolution (CR) to extend current fiscal levels through December 20. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) introduced the measure in the House on September 22, following a weekend of negotiating the agreement with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY).
The CR passed the House on a vote of 341-82 with 132 yes votes cast by Republican majority members joining all 209 members of the Democratic minority. In the Senate, the CR passed by a vote of 78-18 with 50 members of the Democratic majority joined by 28 members of the Republican minority. President Biden is expected to sign the bill into law imminently.
Passage of the CR sets up future negotiations on federal funding levels just ahead of Congress’s holiday recess. NACCED members are encouraged to contact their elected officials and urge them to pass at minimum sustained Fiscal Year (FY) 24 levels in any future funding negotiations.
