Hurricane Florence is expected to hit the southern portion of the U.S. East Coast this weekend, leaving in her wake flooding, loss of power, lack of supplies and emergency situations for first responders. But let’s not forget about the “First Informers”. Broadcasters in the region who rise to the call of community service time and time again. Their resilient commitment to remain on-the-air during such times of crisis and natural disaster are the heartbeat of the communities in which they serve. Whether it’s communicating critical, life saving information or just being a calming voice to residents sorting through a debris field of what was once was their home or business, broadcasters stand ready to do whatever necessary. Two of these stations, WYBB and WCOO in Charleston, South Carolina, are owned by KBA Board Member, Lynn Martin. Martin has been preparing for a weather event of this magnitude for 29-years, since Hurricane Hugo devastated Charleston. The stations recently upgraded their transmitter site to a state of the art hurricane proof bunker at WCBD TV, the local NBC affiliate. The stations plan to remain on-air with local emergency updates before, during and after the storm. While we may only receive some bands of rain from Florence here in the Bluegrass in coming days, I would ask that you please keep our broadcast brothers and sisters affected by this massive storm, in your thoughts and prayers.

Many managers dread having the performance discussion with their lowest performer. But low performance doesn’t necessarily mean your employee isn’t cut out for the work or is unmotivated. Hidden in many under-performers the heart and desire for performance greatness.
Learn to:
• Find what’s really keeping them from achieving
• Develop a coaching relationship and end the parent-child dynamic
• Manage with standards rather than wishes and hopes
