CONGRESSWOMAN NIKI TSONGAS TO HOST A FREE FILM SCREENING AND PANEL DISCUSSION OF THE 2012 AWARD-WINNING DOCUMENTARY "THE INVISIBLE WAR"
Lowell, Ma. - On Tuesday, October 23, 2012, US Congresswoman Niki Tsongas and the Lowell Film Collaborative will host a FREE screening of The Invisible War at the Lowell National Historical Park Visitor Center. The documentary, winner of the 2012 Sundance Film Festival "Audience Award" and directed by Academy and Emmy Award nominated Kirby Dick, chronicles the epidemic of sexual assault in the Military. Tsongas is featured in the film.
As the co-chair of the Military Sexual Assault Prevention Caucus and a member of the House Armed Services Committee, Congresswoman Tsongas has been leading the effort, on behalf of military men and women, to make sure survivors of sexual assault have both the resources and the support they need in order to seek justice. It is estimated that as many as 1 in 3 women leaving the military experience some form of military sexual trauma.
To combat this growing epidemic, Congresswoman Tsongas introduced the Defense Sexual Trauma Response, Oversight and Good Governance Act (The Defense STRONG Act). Signed into law by President Obama, the legislation enables victims to access legal counsel, maintain confidentiality when speaking with victim advocates, grants victims the right to transfer out of their base or unit, and provides greater training for sexual assault prevention at every level of the armed services.
The Congresswoman will participate in a question and answer panel after the film with survivors of military sexual trauma and victims advocates.
