Winter Weatherproofing

September is National Preparedness Month, and as such the same choir of voices cry the warnings of damage winter weather can cause to a building. Wind, hail, sleet, snow, and freezing temperatures: they all seemingly find their way into the cracks and crevices of an unmaintained building envelope. Alas, even the most valiant of checklist-loving building owners cannot escape the inevitable damage that severe winter weather can cause. Together; hail, snow, and cold temperatures generate excessive thermal stress on roofs, walls and windows that require attention.

When the thermal barrier of a building has been breached, emergency service is rendered. And the importance of calling in a reliable, knowledgeable expert is key.

Rather than hastily calling for emergency service, consider contacting a building envelope consultant at the beginning of Fall to assess assets and need for repair/replacement before those items become a more pressing unforeseen issue during winter months. Tending to repairs piecemeal/reactive in the short term can cost more in the long run because of the the hours added for disruption and constant attention.

A building envelope consultant is a one-stop shop who understands all aspects of weather protection components of a building - roofs, windows, walls, brick and mortar, basements, foundations and more. Using a building envelope consultant will save money when hired at the front-end of a repair or replacement project ensuring the most qualified and client-trusted contractors are hired, the right products are used for the building type and that the work is delivered on time, safely and within budget. The peace of mind that comes with a well-maintained and properly-repaired building envelope is priceless.

City of Dallas Building Envelope Renovation
2014 Main Street
The City of Dallas wanted to establish this building as primary Municipal courts and courts administration facility including: Twelve courtrooms with and without jury accommodations, Court administration offices and Fine/Court Fee Collections operations.

Conley Group provided both architectural and engineering Consulting services for the renovation of the Police and Courts Building 2014 Main Street.

Although not registered as an historic building, the City of Dallas considered the building as "Contributing" as it is located in a designated Historic District. The building does maintain a "Landmark" status and was treated as such. Additionally, it was the City's desire to protect the "Oswald related" areas of the building for future restoration and possible public access.

Conley Group was later commissioned to provide Construction Documents, coordinate the rebidding and coordination of Architectural, Structural, Civil and MEP Engineering consultant work in order to meet the City's revised construction budget.
