We kicked off another round of City Manager Conversations earlier this week and it’s been great connecting with so many of you. I look forward to hearing from the rest of you in the coming days. If you don’t feel comfortable speaking up in the meetings please feel free to share comments or questions anonymously via the feedback form.
I’ve been talking about the Guiding Principles in the City Manager Conversations and appreciate those who have shared examples of how you’ve been using the Guiding Principles to influence how you work.
I want to highlight a department embracing the Guiding Principles concepts in a way you might not expect. The Innovation and Technology Department has been leading an in-house soft skills workshop for their team with an emphasis on emotional intelligence. Topics being explored include empathy, active listening, and respectfulness. These are important topics we can all use reminders about. The goal of the initiative is finding ways to build trust within the organization to further openness, quick turnaround on problem solving, and a push to become more proactive vs. being reactive.
I appreciate the IT team taking this approach and look forward to hearing how other departments and sections are embodying the Guiding Principles.
Take care,
Jason
