Older Americans Month
Every May, the Administration on Aging, part of the Administration for Community Living, leads our nation's observance of Older Americans Month. We are pleased to share the 2019 theme: Connect, Create, Contribute.

Communities that encourage the contributions of older adults are stronger. We encourage you to connect, create, and contribute for stronger and more diverse communities this May, and throughout the year. Click HERE to read the full article.

Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP)

The Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) is a federal program designed to respond to the needs of older job seekers with barriers to employment. Authorized by the Older Americans Act, SCSEP provides unemployed, low-income adults 55 years and older with part-time jobs working in local nonprofit, government and faith-based agencies providing services in the community. Working in their community service assignments, SCSEP participants earn income while they build their self-confidence and learn skills valued by local employers.
  • Last program year, a total of 65,081 low-income older adults participated in SCSEP.
  • A total of 51% entered unsubsidized employment.
  • SCSEP participants provided 34.8 million hours of community service with a value of over $820 million, nearly twice the total SCSEP program year 2015 appropriations of $434.4 million.

Register today for the upcoming
Symposium on Resilience
Pro Action is celebrating Community Action Month by hosting a Symposium on Resilience . Join us on May 29, 2019 from 9am-4pm (lunch provided) at the Corning Community College main campus Commons Building.

Our keynote speaker and trainer is Laura Porter, of ACE Interface , and she was a key contributor to the film Resilience: The Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope .

Through the Symposium on Resilience, participants will gain a deeper understanding of NEAR Science as well as strategies for resilience and self-healing communities. In addition, they will discuss ideas for applying this learning in their sphere of influence, and hear about approaches to the use of the ACE questionnaire in service settings.

All participants will receive a certificate of completion provided by Corning Community College.

Poverty Education
Separating the Myths and Facts
Myth: Poor seniors can live well on Social Security.

Fact: Social Security was never intended to cover all the expense of retirement. The average income on social security is $1,262/month, with equals, $15,1444/year. Most seniors live off of social security and many are in debt after meeting essential expenses. What social security doesn't account for are the growing living costs, which can include housing costs, medical costs, and having to take care of grandchildren.

An important part of Pro Action's work is to build knowledge and understanding of the causes and conditions of poverty. Visit our website to learn more about how Pro Action is building a deeper understanding about the experience of poverty.
