KidneyCAN's Annual Rock the Run 5k

On July 12th, KidneyCAN hosted the Rock the Run 5k in Boston, raising over $20,000 for kidney cancer research! The event was a fantastic display of community spirit, with participants running, walking, and cheering each other on in support of our mission.

Friends and families across the United States have also participated in local events to remember their loved ones. Two we want to highlight are Steps for Phyllis and Walk for Jeff.

Steps for Phyllis began as an annual challenge undertaken by Phyllis's husband Lenny. He pledged to walk 500 miles and one million steps to raise money for kidney cancer research. To date, Lenny has raised over $10,000 with what is now an annual event. On May 20th, 2024, Phyllis succumbed to Stage IV kidney cancer more than 12 years after her initial diagnosis. She was a staunch advocate for KidneyCAN during her fight. Read more about the Chandlers and their incredible contributions here.

The Walk for Jeff took place in St. Skokie, Illinois, on July 13th to remember Jeff Sterne on the first anniversary of his passing. More than 100 people gathered to honor Jeff and lift up his family and friends. Team Jeff has raised over $22,000 for kidney cancer research. Read more about Jeff's story as shared by his mother, Cari, here.

Between our Boston participants and the teams who joined us from around the world, we are almost at our $50,000 goal!

The fundraising window is open until July 31st, and we need your help to reach our goal. You can still make a difference by donating to the Rock the Run event.

Jeffrey David Sterne was a passionate musician, as well as an inspiring advocate for kidney cancer research, striving to improve the quality of life for all those battling cancer. We are honored to share his story in this month's KidneyCAN Community Spotlight.

Community Spotlight:

Honoring Jeff Sterne’s Legacy

This month, we shine a spotlight on Jeffrey David Sterne, a passionate advocate who lost his life to kidney cancer at 33. Jeff's journey, marked by his dedication to public service and love for music and history, continues to inspire.

Diagnosed with an aggressive form of kidney cancer in 2019, Jeff became a powerful voice for research, lobbying Congress for increased funding and raising awareness.

On July 13th, the anniversary of Jeff's passing, his family hosted the Walk for Jeff, a 5K event honoring his memory and raising essential funds for kidney cancer research. Read more about Jeff's story and how you can help continue his legacy.
