Celebrate Women @ Your Library

Letter from the Library Director

DRG Oct 2021 Retouched.jpg

Debra Rhodes Gibson, Library Director

St. Johns County Public Library

March is Women's History Month – a celebration of women's contributions to history, culture, and society. The celebration of Women's History Month grew out of a weeklong celebration of women's contributions to US history organized by the school district of Sonoma, California, in 1978. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8 as Women's History Week. The observance has been acknowledged annually in March in the United States since 1987.

Happy Retirement, Harold George!

After 35 years of dedicated service to SJCPLS, it's time for us to say "see you later" to Extension Services Manager Harold George. During his tenure, Harold has worn many hats, including circulation assistant, reference assistant, office manager, and branch manager. His commitment to library services and the St. Johns County community is evident in the numerous programs and initiatives he has championed. Passionate and dedicated, Harold has often been the face of SJCPLS, representing the library at various outreach and partnership events and holding board memberships in community-related organizations. The greatest testament to Harold's commitment to public service is how he contributes to the development of other librarians, ensuring that our future as centers for community knowledge and experiences will endure.

Harold, thank you for your years of commitment to the SJCPLS mission and our community. We will greatly miss you and look forward to serving you. Congratulations on your retirement!

Women's History Month

"From the first settlers who came to our shores, from the first American Indian families who befriended them, men and women have worked together to build this nation. Too often, the women were unsung, and sometimes their contributions went unnoticed. But the achievements, leadership, courage, strength, and love of the women who built America was as vital as that of the men whose names we know so well," President Jimmy Carter's message to the nation designating March 2-8, 1980, as National Women's History Week.

Celebrate Women's History Month with programs or books about women who have had an impact on shaping our current cultural landscape.
