Connect to God
Amanda Palmer, an eccentric performance artist famous for her TED talk on the Art of Asking , supported her art for 5 years by being a living statue known as the “8 foot bride” on city streets with a donation hat at her feet. When someone dropped in money, she looked them in the eye and handed them a flower. Of that experience, Palmer wrote, “I had the most profound encounters with people - we would get this beautiful moment of prolonged eye contact being allowed in a city street and my eyes would say, ‘Thank you. I see you.’ And their eyes would say, ‘Nobody ever sees me. Thank you.’”

This is called transformational giving. It means that the donor is truly seen, their philanthropic motivations, stories, hopes and dreams are known and honored. The gift recipient plays witness to what people truly value and, thus, financially support.

For the 2019 Annual Fund, Revs. Chris and Ginger, the Vestry, members of the Stewardship Committee and the staff are striving to better realize this potential for transformation as well as engaging the profoundly spiritual aspects of asking, giving and receiving. It will be spread out over a longer period of time and we look forward to engaging with you in many ways.

God's peace,
Emily McFarland, Director of Stewardship

Second Thursday Lunch Join us today at noon for eucharist in the chapel and then lunch together in the Fireside Room. Rev. Chris is this month's presenter.

The Annual Parish Meeting  is Sunday, January 27 during and after the 10am service. All are invited to participate in the governance of the church and to hear from the leadership of St. John's about important issues in our common life as a faith community. Light lunch and childcare provided.

Women of Wisdom will meet in the Fireside Room on Thursday, January 24 from 10-11:15am in the Fireside Room.. All women of the Parish are invited to join us for discussion, coffee, and tea. We’ll be discussing the recent growth in pagan/nature-based religion in the US. The article we’ll focus on will be available in next week’s econnect or by emailing Rev. Ginger.

Men’s Group Breakfast Please join us for the St. John’s Men’s Group Father-Son/Daughter pancake breakfast this Saturday, January 12 at 8am (not 7am.) We’ll meet in the church at 8am for a short Eucharist service with the Rev. Skip Fotch, followed by a pancake breakfast and fellowship in the Fireside Room. Please bring your sons and/or daughters. We often have parishioners joining us for the first time at our pancake breakfasts, and we look forward to making new friends. RSVP’s always helpful but not required. Let us know if you can help with breakfast.

Explore the Way of Love in 2019 While on earth, Jesus showed us a way of living characterized by radically open, self-giving love. Each month between now and Easter, St. John’s will explore one faith practice that supports our living out this Way of Love. In January, we’ll consider the practice of WORSHIP and use the season of construction in our worship space as a springboard to consider how and why we gather to worship God.

Dinner Church Resumes This month Dinner Church resumes its 2nd and 4th Tuesday monthly schedule. We share a meal--lovingly prepared by a rockin' group of volunteers--and spiritual conversation in small groups. Open to all. If you'd like to cook, sign up for kitchen crew by calling the church office, 415.456.1102. $5 donation to cover groceries. Join us to wrestle with spiritual questions while we break bread together. We meet in the Parish Hall from 6 -8pm. The kitchen crew assembles at 5pm in the Parish Hall kitchen.
