Connect to God
What a joy it has been to serve as seminarian (seminary student in the ordination process) during a year of transformation at St. John’s Ross, especially in the midst of personal transformation as Raine and I welcomed our first child Llewyn this winter. I find myself encountering scripture differently now that I am a parent, and there is a shift in perspective in my meditations on God as both Mother and Father, and on us as God’s children. I’ve had a growing awareness of the expansive possibility of love after meeting Llewyn. I have been pondering what it would mean to open myself up to the same overflow of God’s love, to rest in being God’s child in the same way Llewyn rests in our arms.

During my year at St. John’s, it has often been God’s children teaching me what it means to live in light of the love of God. It has been a privilege to experience the children at the 9am Family Service fearlessly asking questions and to encounter the space that is held for their honest queries, doubts and fears.

This openness is not just confined to children. I’m thankful for the open hearts and minds that so many parishioners have. There is a readiness to hear from God, to be moved by the Spirit and to follow Jesus out into the neighborhood. With their Mission Trips, youth are leading the way, even taking St. John’s beyond the neighborhood, across the state and country to places of pain caused by both a racist past and racist present. All while exploring the possibility of reconciliation so the church can fulfill its baptismal covenant to strive for justice and peace of all people, and respect the dignity of every human being.

This Sunday, May 19th will be my last Sunday serving as seminarian this term. You’ll occasionally see Llewyn, Raine and I over the summer when we are in town. This summer I’ll be participating in the Episcopal Preaching Excellence Program, studying New Testament Greek and visiting The Episcopal Church in Panama before joining my brother in rural Panama supporting his non-profit, This Is Health, providing critical health care to families among the indigenous Ngäbe people. Your prayers for this work and travel are appreciated.

I am thrilled to be returning as a seminarian next September to continue to be part of this parish that is making worship more accessible and is embracing the adventure of learning to love our neighbor. Thank you for helping me grow in my call to the priesthood and welcoming my family into St. John’s. My prayer is that everyone who enters St. John’s experiences the same welcome as we all continue to grow in the knowledge of God’s love for us.

Flour Bagging & Blessing Join Elizabeth DeRuff, founder of Honoré Farm and Mill , on Tuesday, June 4,10am-noon in the Parish Hall to bag the flour used to bake our communion bread. Each season St. John’s receives heirloom flour that is freshly stone-milled and grown locally and sustainably. Practice your spiritual values by joining us as each 2-lb. bag is hand-filled, weighed, and blessed before it is boxed up and sent out to sister parishes. Volunteers of any age are welcome, as well as those who are interested in sustainable agriculture and the local food movement. All volunteers take home a bag of fresh flour for their personal use.

New Opportunities at Gilead House Please email Rev. Ginger at to volunteer. In addition to childcare and mentoring opportunities Gilead is also seeking:
  • Administrative Volunteers: Have a couple of hours once a week during business hours? Help with simple admin tasks, answer phone calls, and get to know Gilead House families.
  • Saturday Activity Leaders: Have a hobby or activity to share? A great opportunity for individuals or groups. Lead an enrichment activity for moms or kids on a Saturday morning.
  • Transport Team: can you help change a tire, fix a flat, or make minor repairs? Or are you an extra savvy car buyer or deal negotiator? Many folks coming out of homelessness can be derailed by a car breakdown or get taken advantage of by a car dealer. If you’d be willing to offer help and advice to a family from time to time, please reach out.

Interested in helping out with little ones? We need teen and adult volunteers in our Nursery on Sunday mornings to assist our professional nursery worker. Volunteers care for kids from 9:45 through the end of the service and can sign up for the Sundays that work for them. Please note that we take extra care with those who work with children at St. John’s so volunteers must be willing to undergo special training and a background check.

Get to know our neighbors. St. John’s volunteers serve lunch to those in need of food and community at St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room. We need volunteers every second Saturday of the month and the last Saturday of the month, from 10:30am-1pm. To volunteer or learn more, contact Becky Hlebasko via email or 415.846.1589. Open to adults and to youth aged 14 and up.
