Caregivers are Essential Partners in Care
Caregivers play a critical role on the care team, providing physical and emotional support to a family member or friend. In fact, evidence shows that when health care providers include caregivers as part of the team, it improves the health outcomes of the care recipient. It also leads to a better experience for both the caregiver and the care provider.

The Ontario Caregiver Organization, in partnership with Ontario Health, is excited to announce the launch of OCO’s Essential Care Partner Support Hub. The new Support Hub has been created to help hospitals and long-term care homes in Ontario either enhance or implement their Essential Care Partner Program - leading practices related to caregiver inclusion by formally identifying, including, and supporting caregivers as part of the care team, even during times of health system pressures. The support hub provides organizations with coaching, guidance and access to resources created in collaboration with care providers and caregivers.

While the Support Hub is just getting underway, the development of Essential Care Partner programs has been happening in a number of organizations over the past three years. These organizations have shared their knowledge, experience and learnings as members of OCO’s Essential Care Partner Learning Collaborative.

The launch of the Essential Care Partner Support Hub marks a significant milestone for the Ontario Caregiver Organization. The work we are doing with health system partners is instrumental in improving the lives of caregivers, the people they care for, and health care providers across the province.

May 1-7 is Mental Health Week
The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA)’s Mental Health Week is an annual national event that encourages people from all walks of life to learn, talk, reflect and engage with others on all issues relating to mental health.

OCO understands caregivers face unique challenges which can often have a negative impact on mental health. One in 5 (22%) caregivers say their mental health is worse than it was amid the pandemic, while 63% say they hit their breaking point last year and had no choice but to keep going. The Ontario Caregiver Organization offers programs and services to support caregivers through their journey. 90Second Caregiver
Many caregivers provide around-the-clock care, and often don’t have the time to pause and think about their own well-being. As a result, many caregivers experience burnout, depression, isolation, and loneliness. There are different ways to support your physical and mental health. Having easy access to relevant caregiver information and practical tips can help.

The 90Second Caregiver health letter, created by Dr. Patrick McGrath, a Canadian clinical psychologist, is a free weekly email delivered to your inbox. Each letter takes only 90 seconds to read and covers a particular health topic, practical tips, and a self-assessment survey followed by personalized insights and suggestions to improve your overall wellness and self-confidence.
