Message from Your Principal and Assistant Principal

Dear Connect HS Families:

Robert and I have been able to share with most of our students and families, the bittersweet news that Ms. Letha Wells has decided to embark on a new journey and is no longer a member of the DV Connect HS Staff.  We wish her well!!

We are currently working to find a new English teacher to join us. Until we do, Robert, Brendan  and I will be working to create lessons for our students.  We were also fortunate to secure long term subs that are familiar with Connect HS, will work together and ensure your students have meaningful continuation of learning.

We are happy to share that we will be administering the PSAT on October 25th.  Juniors interested in taking the PSAT please email your counselor Sylvia Soria ssoria@davincischools.org, sophomores interested in taking the PSAT please email your counselor Kene Washington kwashington@davincischools.org.  More detailed information about the PSAT will be sent out shortly.

Best,

Tami and Robert

REMINDERS:

9/15 (THIS Friday) NO SCHOOL

9/18 – 9/22 FALL Map Assessments (all grade levels)

10/16 - 10/20 Student Led Conferences (SLCs)

Why MAP Assessments? And revised class schedule….

MAP, or the Measure of Academic Progress, is an adaptive test* which helps teachers, parents, and administrators improve learning for all students and assist them in making informed decisions that promote a child's individual academic growth.

*Adaptive test -Computer-adaptive tests are designed to adjust their level of difficulty—based on the responses provided—to match the knowledge and ability of a test taker. If a student gives a wrong answer, the computer follows up with an easier question; if the student answers correctly, the next question will be more difficult.

Please have your student bring their chromebook fully charged (and with the charger to school).

Week of 9/18 ONLY (School begins and ends at the same time, however students will start their day in their advisory period for MAP assessment)

Advisory 9:15 - 11:15 (MAP Assessment)

1st Period 11:20- 12:20

Lunch - 12:20 - 12:50

2nd Period 12:55 - 2:00

SNHU Time!!

All 9th graders should have completed their SNHU applications by now. The SNHU student portal (Brightspace) will be available to students starting Monday, August 28, 2023. Students must submit at least one assignment in Brightspace by Friday, September 8, 2023. Failing to submit an assignment by that deadline will result in the student being dropped from SNHU for the rest of the Fall Semester.

Students will have the opportunity to enroll in SNHU for the Spring Semester… We will continue to send information in our newsletter!  We have students working independently on SNHU this semester, Evelyn will be tracking their progress and checkin in with them in regards to assignment submissions and feedback from SNHU professors.

A Message from Dr. Emily Green

Welcome back 23-24

Dear Parents, Guardians and Students,

Welcome back! I hope you had a relaxing, fun and healthy summer! Here is an update from the health team-

Health Accommodations/Needs: If your student needs health support during the school day or has any injury or accident you would like us to be aware of, please contact school nurse at egreen@davincischools.org. (example: is having an upcoming surgery, diagnosed with a new condition, experiences a concussion over the weekend, etc). Short term accommodations or referral for increased support can be put in place for your student.

Medications: If your child needs to take medication during the school day, we require physician and parent authorization, including over the counter medications. Medical Authorization Form. Students are strictly prohibited from bringing any medication to school unless this form is completed. This form can be emailed, faxed or dropped off on campus. For medication needs without authorization, parents are welcome to come to campus to administer.

Illnesses: Parents are encouraged NOT to send their child to school if they appear ill. A child should remain at home for their own welfare and for the protection of other students if they have a fever >99 degrees or if they are sick with symptoms such as productive cough, vomiting, diarrhea.

**COVID: Please continue to report all cases of COVID to egreen@davincischools.org. Students are asked to isolate for 5 days from illness onset or positive test per LA County Public Health protocols and we will assist in calculating the return timeline. Contact notices will be sent to families if there are 3 or more linked cases confirmed in our community. COVID tests are available at school for students to use and take home as needed. Masks are welcome and optional for all staff and students.

Emergency Contact: Please remember to notify us when there is a change in your emergency or work telephone numbers in case of emergency.

Heat: We are well into the summer heat and it will likely stay that way through our first weeks of school. Da Vinci staff encourages students to stay cool, stay hydrated, and stay informed of what heat exhaustion looks like. Make sure water is available during outdoor activities, take regular breaks and prioritize hydration!

Vision/ Hearing Screening: Students and families can request a vision and hearing screening. Vision vouchers for free eye exams and glasses are available for eligible families.

More information can be found at https://www.davincischools.org/health-services/

Thank you and here is to a safe, healthy and fun school year!
