Greetings!
This week there have been two important developments that I want to highlight:
- Reorganization of our City Council
- City actions related to continuing bluff erosion at 310 Esplanade Ave.
On Wednesday, Dec. 14, the City Council held a special meeting to reorganize as a result of the recent election. Two incumbent Council members were thanked for their service and two newly elected Council members were sworn in—the Council Chamber was packed with well wishers! In addition, a new Mayor was selected by the new City Council to serve in that role for the next year. For more information, please check out the City Council’s webpage:

On Thursday, Dec. 15, the City held a press conference to announce planned actions to demolish a vacated apartment building at 310 Esplanade Ave. This is the building that last January was deemed uninhabitable and “yellow-tagged” by our Building Official. Since then we have been monitoring the bluff condition and with the recent rain and storms, the deterioration has increased at an alarming rate. The property is under private ownership but the owner has declared bankruptcy and has no funding to respond. Because it’s such a serious public safety concern, the City is stepping in to take the building down but will seek reimbursement from the owner. For more information, please see the

On a related note, you likely heard news stories about the “sink hole” at Oceanaire Apartments (located just north of 310 Esplanade Ave.) this week. Fortunately, that property owner is acting responsibly to repair the damage sustained and stabilize the bluff edge. In that case, the City has played no role. The owner posted the sign closing beach access and roped off the area. Since the damage is to the bluff edge, the permitting authority is the California Coastal Commission. Our jurisdiction covers only activity on the bluff top.
We are hopeful that this winter won’t be as challenging for our City as last year’s but rest assured that your City staff and City Council are taking all steps possible to protect the City and respond appropriately.

- Caltrans to Close Right Turn Lane Southbound Hwy 1 & Rockaway Beach Ave on Dec. 19 - 20 - Caltrans work scheduled on Dec. 19 and 20, 2016 for the location and destruction of abandoned monitoring wells will result in the right turn lane closure at southbound Hwy 1 and Rockaway Beach Avenue between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm. Phase 2 of the work will occur between Dec. 26, 2016 and Jan. 6, 2017 during the same hours. See the Caltrans Traffic Advisory Notice for more information. Please contact Caltrans directly with questions / concerns.
- Did you miss the Equalization Basin Project Public Meeting? - The Wet Weather Equalization Basin Project ("Project") is a 2.1 million gallon underground holding tank to be used during a storm event to prevent sanitary sewer overflow in the lower Linda Mar area. A public meeting on the Project was held on Dec. 15 and a presentation on the Project was made at the Dec. 12 City Council meeting (see a recording of that City Council meeting here). Public comments on the Draft Mitigated Negative Declaration / Initial Study for the Project are due January 13, 2017 to Bonny O'Connor, Planning Department, 1800 Francisco Blvd., Pacifica, CA 94044 or by email to: o'connorb@ci.pacifica.ca.us. Hard copies of the MND/IS document are available for review at the following locations:

The purpose of the Parks, Beaches & Recreation Commission is to recommend and advise the Council in the acquisition, development and maintenance of parks, beaches and other recreational areas, and to encourage the planning and implementation of a comprehensive recreation and human service program which will serve the needs of the residents of the City.
