Happy September! So many upcoming events to highlight and much news to report. First, I encourage you to peruse the City’s List of FY2017-18 Accomplishments to get a glimpse of the many and varied projects, programs, and initiatives the City has accomplished! Secondly, note the Hwy 1 nighttime road closures and detour routes coming up the week of September 17th for Caltrans’ work on the San Jose Avenue Pedestrian Overcrossing project. Thirdly, Sea Level Rise/Local Coastal Plan Update Draft Policies will be released early next week for public comment, followed by a Public Meeting on Saturday, 9/15, noon at the Community Center, as well as Technical and Community Work Group meetings on Thursday 9/13 (also open to the public).

September is jam packed with many notable events: There will be a Historical Tourism presentation on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2:00 p.m. at the Pacifica Coastside Museum by Mitch Postel, President of the San Mateo County Historical Association. Saturday, Sept. 15 is Coastal Cleanup Day , the Rancho Day Fiesta at the Sanchez Adobe , in addition to the City’s Sea Level Rise meeting. And on Tuesday, September 25, from 7-9 p.m. there is a public information meeting provided by the County about the Ohlone-Portola Heritage Trail . Of course, the FogFest is also fast approaching Sept. 29-30!

  • Draft Adaptation Policies for Sea Level Rise - Public Meeting on Saturday, September 15 - A public workshop will be hosted on Saturday, September 15 from 12:00pm to 3:00pm at the Pacifica Community Center Auditorium, 540 Crespi Drive to review the Draft Adaptation Policies. Please mark your calendars. The draft policies will be available on September 10 at www.cityofpacifica.org/SeaLevelRise.

  • Volunteer for Coastal Cleanup Day on September 15 for the World’s Biggest Beach Cleanup - Each September on the 3rd Saturday of the month, Earth Heroes of all ages take action during California Coastal Cleanup Day in one of the largest volunteer efforts around the world. The Pacifica Beach Coalition has been hosting this day of action and celebration since 1998. Organized cleanup sites are scheduled throughout Pacifica from 9:00am – 11:00am on Saturday, September 15, and anyone can participate from big to small.   • Full Freeway Closure of Hwy 1 in Pacifica Weeknights Sept. 17–21 for Construction on Replacement Pedestrian Overcrossing - Nighttime Closures on Hwy 1: Mon.–Fri. / Sept. 17–21, 2018. Caltrans will close Highway 1 in Pacifica between Clarendon Road and Paloma Avenue each weeknight from Monday, September 17 - Friday, September 21 to allow work crews to erect temporary support structures at the San Jose Avenue pedestrian overcrossing. The San Jose pedestrian overcrossing is being replaced with a new pedestrian overcrossing currently being built 80-feet to the north of the old structure.   • Pacifica Police Offer Active Shooter Response Class to the Public on September 12 - Recent national tragedies remind us that the risk is real- an active shooter incident can happen in any place at any time. The best ways to make sure you and your loved ones stay safe are to prepare ahead of time and be ready. Taking a few steps now and mentally rehearsing what you can do can help you react quickly when every second counts. Learn those steps in this class offered on Wednesday, September 12 from 6:00pm - 7:30pm at the Pacifica Police Station. For more information and to register click here.

  • Rancho Day Fiesta at the Historic Sanchez Adobe on Saturday, September 15 - Travel back in time on Saturday, September 15 with the annual Rancho Day Fiesta at the historic Sanchez Adobe located at 1000 Linda Mar Blvd. in Pacifica. This event takes place from 12:00pm – 4:00pm. Families will enjoy early California music, Rancho style refreshments and demonstrations of bygone trades. Children’s activities include making adobe bricks, stamping leather, dipping candles, making corn husk dolls, churning butter, weaving wheat and participating in other rancho-era doings. Admission to the event is free; there is a charge for food and crafts. Click here for additional information.

  • Historical Tourism Presentation at the “Little Brown Church” on September 16 - Historical Tourism describes the use of historical places, people, or events to encourage visitors to come to an area of historical importance. The City of Pacifica has the oldest history in San Mateo County. The public is invited to a presentation on September 16 at 2:00pm at the Pacifica Coastside Museum (“Little Brown Church”) at 1850 Francisco Blvd. at which Mitch Postel, President of the San Mateo County Historical Association will highlight the history of our Coastside area and its importance to Pacifica’s economy.
