Connect With Pacifica This Week

We hope you are enjoying the fall season! We have a couple of fun community events coming up within the next week. Tomorrow night, November 3, 2018, Pacificans Care , a local community group that provides funding for the City’s Senior Services and Child Care Services programs, will be hosting their 10th Annual Speakeasy Night at the Pacifica Community Center. Also on November 10, 2018, from 10 am to 1 pm the City’s Beautification Advisory Committee will be coordinating the planting of Palmetto Avenue as part of the City’s Palmetto Avenue Streetscape project. There’s more information on both events below.

Two important City Council public hearings regarding moving to a district-based City Council elections system, beginning with the 2020 City Council election, are upcoming on November 17 and November 29. The City is seeking your input in planning for this change and has created a webpage, www.drawpacifica.org , where you can learn more about this process and provide your ideas for district maps, in addition to the upcoming public hearings about the drawing of district maps.

In other news, please take the 3-minute Pacifica Libraries Vision Survey to let us know your thoughts about the innovative Open Access Library operating model that will keep open and enhance Sanchez Library services while also building a new Sharp Park Main Branch Library!

Please let me know if you have comments or questions, and  thank you  for wanting to  Connect with Pacifica !

  • Election and Voting Information - San Mateo County is one of 14 counties authorized by the State to conduct elections under the California Voter's Choice Act (VCA), which changes the traditional polling place election model to an All-Mailed Ballot/Vote Center model with ballot drop-off locations to expand accessibility and voting opportunities for all voters. If you are a registered voter in San Mateo County, you can vote right now for the November 6, 2018 election - by mail or in person. Simply mail back the ballot you received by mail in the provided, postage-paid envelope. Alternatively, you can drop your ballot in the provided envelope at one of the drop box locations in San Mateo County. We have a ballot drop box right here at Pacifica City Hall, 170 Santa Maria Ave. Vote in person at one of the Vote Centers in the County. Pacifica will have 2 vote centers open from November 3 through November 6 at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 700 Oddstad Blvd. and Pacifica School District Office, 375 Reina del Mar. At Vote Centers, you can cast a ballot, request a replacement ballot, use an accessible voting machine, receive multilingual assistance and register / re-register to vote. Find more information and a full list of Vote Centers that are open now at www.smcvote.org.

  • Public Hearings and Input on Transition to District-Based Elections in Pacifica - Did you receive a flyer this week in the mail on "Mapping Pacifica's Future of Elections"? Similar to hundreds of local governments across California in recent years, a legal challenge based on the California Voting Rights Act is forcing Pacifica to consider moving to a district-based City Council elections system, beginning with the 2020 City Council election. The City is seeking your input in planning for this change and has created a webpage, www.drawpacifica.org, where you can learn more about this process and provide your ideas for district maps. The next public hearing on the districting process and discussion of draft maps will be held on Saturday, November 17 at 10:00am at City Council Chambers, 2212 Beach Boulevard. Submit your own draft map by November 7 to be considered at the November 17 hearing.

  • Pacificans Care Speakeasy Night November 3 - The biggest fundraising night of the year in Pacifica is on November 3rd! At the 10th Annual Pacificans Care Speakeasy Night, the Pacifica Community Center will be transformed into a lively "speakeasy" on November 3 from 7:00pm – 11:00pm as all of Pacifica is invited to go back in time to Bootlegger Days. Check out the Pacificans Care website for more information on how to experience the roaring 20’s to benefit Pacificans Care and their generous contributions to local social service organizations in our community, including our Senior Services and Child Care Services programs, as well as the Pacifica Resource Center and the Pacifica Youth Service Bureau. Have fun while giving back to our community!
Curb Appeal Comes to Palmetto
The Beautification Advisory Committee is coordinating the planting of Palmetto Avenue as part of the City’s Palmetto Avenue Streetscape project this Saturday, November 10 from 10:00am to 1pm along Palmetto Avenue. Community organizations, businesses and individuals have adopted curbs cut-outs along Palmetto and will be planting the corner landscape areas on Palmetto Avenue from Clarendon to Paloma Ave. Sponsors will be prepping the soil with compost, planting a variety of drought tolerant, low maintenance plants and installing drip irrigation connected to the recycled water system installed along the street. Sponsors have agreed to maintain the landscape areas during the next two years.

While the sponsors are planting the curbs, the Sanchez Art Center will be hosting a “Garden Stake Planting Party” at the corner of Palmetto and Montecito between 10am and 1:00pm. The community is invited to create painted garden stakes that will “planted” throughout the landscaped areas along Palmetto. Join in the fun of beautifying Palmetto Avenue.

Sponsors participating in the Palmetto Streetscape project include Rotary Club of Pacifica, resident David Leal, Recology of the Coast, Pacifica Library Foundation, Friends of the Library, Reflection Hair Salon, Pacifica Lions Club, Fog Fest Organizing Group, Pacifica Environmental Family, Pacifica Historical Society, Pacifica Resource Center and Dial Glass and Window Company.

Members of the Beautification Advisory Committee and the Department of Public of Works will be on hand to assist groups with the landscaping project.

There are still landscape spots available for adoption. Community organizations, business and individuals interested in being a part Phase 2 of the Palmetto Streetscape are urged to contact the Beautification Advisory Committee by calling the Public Works Department at 650-738-3767.
