School Spotlight: Wingate Elementary
This school year, Wingate Elementary implemented a new project-based learning club that encourages students to collaborate and hone their problem solving skills.

The scope of the club’s semester-long assignments are designed to be challenging and complex at times, Wingate Elementary AIG teacher Dawn Toot said. But they also expose students to in-demand career fields and require them to think critically as they spend weeks researching and working together to complete their projects.

In the fall, the students worked as physician assistants for an injured Carolina Panthers player. They not only accurately diagnosed the athlete’s ACL tear but also spent weeks researching the correct physical therapy regiment needed to get him back on the field.

That project culminated in a press conference at the end of the semester, when the students presented their research, findings and proposed physical therapy plan.

This semester, the students are donning their lab coats once again. But this time, they’re working as civil engineers.
