If the start of the new school year presents challenges for your child, we can help.
Office of Children and Families (OCF) September workshops connect parents to information and supports to address challenging behaviors, curb sibling rivalries, get your infant off to a healthy start and more.
This issue of the Parent Pages can also help your family deal with the stress of a new school year; learn more about kindergarten readiness, boost your child's self-confidence, keep them safe at the bus stop and prepared for emergencies.
We hope you will join us at the Early Care and Education Conference on September 30. And remember, individual assistance is just a phone call away - call the CARE Line (410-313-2273) for information and referrals.

September is Emergency Preparedness Month
Prepare your children and family to face emergencies and disasters head-on. Does your family have an evacuation plan or the necessary supplies to shelter in place? In addition to creating a family plan, it is important to practice emergency preparedness with your children. If you don’t know where to start, use the Howard County Office of Emergency Management’s emergency plan template and disaster recovery kit template as a guide. Learn more about emergency preparedness resources in Howard County.
Back to School safety tips:
- Help your children memorize their address and phone number.
- Establish a "safe" word. Protect your child from strangers by establishing a "safe" word only immediate family and close friends know. If a stranger tries to approach your children, they can ask that person for the "safe" word before trusting them.
- Get to know the other children and parents in your neighborhood and make sure your kids use the "buddy system" when walking to and from school.
- Teach your children not to keep secrets from you.
- Do not allow your children to play in the street at the bus stop.

Locally, the Howard County Food Bank continues to be a reliable resource for those facing food insecurity.
