A Note from our President and CEO

Hello Friends of HMUW,

As we enter August, I am struck by how perfectly the last two weeks have captured the essence of Heart of Missouri United Way.

Last week, our Board of Directors came together for our annual retreat, spending time reviewing our strategic plan and engaging in meaningful conversations about community impact. We explored what impact truly means, where the greatest opportunities exist, and how HMUW is best positioned to create positive change throughout our region. It was a valuable opportunity to reflect, ask important questions, and ensure we remain focused on meeting the evolving needs of our community.

Next week, we will gather for a very different kind of reflection as we celebrate our 80th anniversary.

For eight decades, United Way has been a force for bringing people together to address our community's most pressing challenges. Generations of volunteers, donors, partners, board members, and advocates have built the foundation we stand on today. Their commitment and vision have shaped an organization that continues to adapt, grow, and serve.

What makes these two moments so meaningful is how closely they are connected. While our anniversary invites us to celebrate our past, our board retreat challenged us to strengthen our future. One reminds us where we've been; the other helps define where we're going. Together, they reinforce our responsibility to honor the legacy we've inherited while thoughtfully preparing for the opportunities and challenges ahead.

As we celebrate 80 years of impact, I am filled with gratitude for everyone who has been part of this journey and excitement for what comes next. Thank you for continuing to walk alongside us as we work to build a stronger, healthier, and more connected community for generations to come.

Community Celebration: 

80 Years of Heart of Missouri United Way

We're throwing it back to the 1980's to celebrate 
80 amazing years of the Heart of Missouri United Way.



Join us on Thursday, Aug. 6th at 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm,

at The Kitchen (3711 Discovery Pkwy, Columbia). 



This free, family-friendly event is open to the public.

Expect live music, signature drinks, a short program, and a cornhole tournament. Don't miss out! ASL interpreters will be present throughout the event.

2026 Board Retreat

At the 2026 Board Retreat, our Board of Directors came together to discuss and help shape Heart of Missouri United Way’s strategic plan for the next several years. Through thoughtful conversations and fresh ideas, board members explored opportunities to strengthen our impact, respond to emerging community needs, and build an even brighter future for the people we serve.

Heart of Missouri United Way works collaboratively with other United Way organizations across Missouri to provide local community connection services for those in need across our state. The 211 community resource connection service provides those in need with a centralized contact point to identify local resources that may be able to provide assistance.

Should you, a loved one, or someone you know ever be in need of support, please dial 2-1-1 anytime or send a text to 1-800-427-4626 between 9am and 5pm Monday through Friday to be connected with a trained specialist that may be of assistance. You may also access an online directory of services at www.211helps.org.



Heart of Missouri United Way invests in programs at nonprofit organizations in the impact areas of health and basic needs, education, and financial stability. Our investments reach individuals and families in Boone, Cooper, and Howard Counties.
