SELF-CARE DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON

The holiday season, while a time of joy and celebration for many, can also be stressful. A poll from the American Psychological Association found that 9 in 10 people were experiencing stress due to economic hardship, separation from or loss of loved ones, and the anticipation of family conflict.

A NAMI survey also found that 64 percent of individuals living with a mental illness reported that their conditions worsened around the holidays.

This blog post from SAMHSA offers strategies to support mental health during the holidays.

Visit www.trafficsafetymarketing.gov for pre-holiday and holiday campaigns to share impaired driving prevention messaging on social media.

Fast Fact: Concurrent use of alcohol and marijuana worsens driving performance more than either substance by itself. Read more.

Driving requires concentration, coordination, visual acuity, as well as the ability to make decisions quickly.

Drinking alcohol impairs brain function, affecting a person's ability to safely operate a vehicle. Even a small amount of alcohol can affect driving ability. In 2021, there were 2,266 people killed in alcohol-related crashes, where a driver had a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) of .01 to .07 g/dL (NHTSA).
