OCTOBER 2025 NEWSLETTER

Connecticut Clearinghouse is a library and resource center for information on substance use and mental health disorders, prevention, health promotion and wellness, harm reduction, treatment and recovery, and other related topics.

UPCOMING EVENTS AND TRAININGS

The CDC reports that 12 million people are affected by domestic violence every year. Survivors are at increased risk for:

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Major depressive disorder
  • Self-injury
  • Suicide, and
  • Substance use

Trauma-informed approaches recognize and intentionally respond to the lasting adverse effects of experiencing traumatic events (SAMHSA).

Join us in-person at Connecticut Clearinghouse on November 10 for Mental Health First Aid.

Research shows that people who take a Mental Health First Aid training feel better equipped and more confident in their ability to help someone experiencing a mental health crisis or to even seek additional support for themselves.

In addition, training participants demonstrate a better understanding of the signs and risk factors of mental health and substance use challenges. They are also more knowledgeable about professional resources available to people in distress.

We are delighted to have Taylor Milton return on November 19 for Reiki!

Rooted in ancient Japanese healing practices, Reiki is based on a belief in an energy that supports the body's innate healing abilities.

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health defines Reiki as a complementary health approach in which practitioners lightly place their hands on or hover just above a person with the goal of directing energy to help facilitate the person's own healing response.

Potential health benefits include: better sleep and mood, pain reduction, increased energy, and improved focus.

Substance use Prevention Month

Preventing substance use in youth is key to healthy emotional, physical and social development. Families, educators, prevention specialists, and caring adults all play a crucial role in creating safe, supportive environments and guiding young people toward healthy habits that help them avoid alcohol, cannabis, e-cigarettes, and other drugs.

Red Ribbon Week - October 23-31

Red Ribbon Week highlights the importance of living a drug-free life. It presents an opportunity for parents, educators, and communities to reinforce the drug-free messages they share with their children throughout the year.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

The National Network to End Domestic Violence reports that financial abuse occurs in 99 percent of domestic violence cases.

As with all forms of domestic violence, financial abuse is rooted in the desire of one partner to have power and control over the other. Examples of financial abuse include:

  • Taking or stealing money
  • Sabotaging an individual's job
  • Preventing an individual from working or choosing his or her own career
  • Withholding necessities, such as shelter, medications, clothes, and food
  • Withholding or using credit cards without permission
  • Rigidly controlling an individual's finances

Check out On Point's podcast on financial abuse of domestic violence survivors.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, including financial abuse, contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1.800.799.SAFE (7233). Chat online or text START to 88788.
