SEPTEMBER 2025 NEWSLETTER | | Connecticut Clearinghouse is a library and resource center for information on substance use and mental health disorders, prevention, health promotion and wellness, harm reduction, treatment and recovery, and other related topics. | | UPCOMING EVENTS AND TRAININGS | | | | | This in-person session will take a closer look at how student well-being, family involvement, and school support all work together. Aimed at all educators, families, and school leaders, we’ll explore how teaming up across home and school can boost mental health, help students stay safe, and support learning. | We’ll talk about how schools, families, and communities can work together to improve student mental health, reduce risky choices, and help kids succeed in school. | You’ll walk away with simple, practical ideas to build stronger connections between educators and families—and create a more supportive space for all students. | | | | | | Research shows that communities of color, including the Latine community, are disproportionately impacted by problem gambling, yet underrepresented in access to prevention, intervention, treatment, recovery supports, and research. | Utilizing an equity lens, this training will create awareness about the cultural characteristics amongst Latine individuals and their families, in an effort to improve engagement and partnerships that can promote access to problem gambling prevention, treatment, and recovery programs; increase trauma-informed programming; and address the Structural Determinants of Health (SDOH) and inequities, resulting in increased quality of life. |

Rates of alcohol-induced deaths among the general population nearly doubled from 1999 to 2024
In an analysis by race, sex, age, and geography, alcohol-induced death rates in 2024 are nearly double those in 1999, with a sharp increase at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although rates are higher for men, the largest increase in alcohol-induced deaths over the full 25-year period occurred in females aged 25-34, according to a study published on September 17 by Dr. Tony Wong and colleagues at UCLA in the open-access journal PLOS Global Public Health.
