Greetings!

After a quieter July, August is once again packed with events all across the country! There's a huge range of interests and skills being covered by experts in their fields, so have a look and see what interests you. I'd like to particularly highlight the upcoming webinar we are hosting to introduce the Nature Restoration Law: what it is and how will it apply to Ireland.

Locally, we have an article from Wicklow about WWEN's recent visit to the fantastic Castleruddery Organic Farm. I found it a joy to read about this farm and their work, including their determination to work with restaurants that align with their own values.

In our resources section there's also a recording of An Taisce's webinar all about nitrates. A must watch for anyone conccerned about water quaility in Ireland. If you're looking for a creative outlet and are passionate about our ancient woodlands, have a look at the open call from CELT: Writing the Land.

All this and more below.

Catherine

Pre All Ireland Permaculture Gathering 2025 Meitheals -

Compost Toilet Building Workshops & Seed Camp Set Up

Sat August 9th & 16th, 11am to 4pm

Galway

CELT and the All Ireland Permaculture Network are delighted to once again work with the local coordinating team and the Slieve Aughty Centre to host this year's All Ireland Permaculture Gathering from August 23rd - 24th 2025 in Co. Galway.

We are really excited and welcome you to our two Pre - Gathering Meitheals and Hands On Building Workshops for Compost Toilets and Camp Set Up on Sat.. AUGUST 9th & 16th.. from 11am - 4pm

Please join us as we start to prepare and create the Community Camp for this year's events

This annual gathering of permaculture practitioners, self organises to share 'Earth Care, People Care and Fair Share' skills and knowledge offering workshops on sustainable land use, compost heating, seed saving, community organising and covers many aspects from how to build your own house and Co-housing, to no-dig forest gardening, growing mealworms at home and identity, sexuality and community to name but a few topics.

CELT are delighted to assist in the All Ireland Permaculture Association aims to strengthen the permaculture network across Ireland and develop a vision to advance the knowledge and practice of permaculture on the island of Ireland through sharing, networking and advocacy.

The Hands On Meitheal will give you :

-Understanding of the benefits, health and hygiene related to compost toilets

-Design options for constructing outdoor compost toilets

-Knowledge of practicalities with using a compost toilet

- Benefits of working collaboratively as part of a community

The course will entail hands on making of compost toilets on site at the Slieve Aughty Centre, so please dress appropriately for outdoor activities. The Workshops are suitable for anyone wishing to join us for our upcoming permaculture gathering and anyone wishing to build their own compost loo in their back garden, school or project site.

These 2 Meitheal days gives us the opportunity to share our sustainable living and permaculture skills and knowledge, and learn the basic steps and the nuts and bolts of how to design, build and manage our own back garden outdoor composting toilet, which are waste-free toilets that rely on the biological process of composting to recycle toilet material, and produce humanure.

PLEASE NOTE FOR WORKSHOP - PLEASE BRING TOOLS! HAMMERS, NAILS, SAWS, or ANYTHING ELSE YOU THINK MIGHT BE REQUIRED on the day!

Recycling our humanure, food and other organic waste into compost provides a range of environmental benefits, including improving soil health, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, recycling nutrients, reducing water wastage and thereby mitigating the impact of droughts.

Although most of the world's humanure is currently quickly flushed down a drain, or discarded into the environment as a pollutant, as permaculturists, we know it instead as a rich natural resource that can be converted, through composting, into lush vegetative growth, and used to feed humanity.

Everyone is welcome to come along and to help us to build our camp, gather energy and ideas and co create resources and materials needed for our upcoming All Island Gathering!

To reserve your place on these Seed Camp Meitheal please visit and register your interest on celtnet.org and https://www.facebook.com/events/1463880468363278

‘What you need to know about nitrates’ with An Taisce's Head of Advocacy, Dr Elaine McGoff.

Webinar recording

This recorded webinar explores what nitrates are, how they can negatively impact ecology and why this continues to be an issue in Ireland.

Water quality has been in the news a lot lately, from the giant algal blooms of Ireland’s largest lake, Lough Neagh, to the recent EPA report citing the dire ecological status of Lady's Island Lake in Wexford. Most recently, nitrates pollution in our waterways & Ireland's farming derogation is under further scrutiny from the EU.

Watch back to get a deeper understanding of why Ireland’s south and southeast are the worst affected when it comes to nitrate pollution, and why this overlaps with the highest number of derogation farms.

You can watch the video by clicking this link.

OPEN CALL - Writing the Land - The Great Forest of Aughty & Community & Cultural Storytelling project in partnership with the Woodland League!

We are delighted to host a storytelling platform and welcome community collaborators and participants to share their ancient forest and biodiversity stories with us for our creative story telling project titled - Writing the Land: The Great Forest of Aughty

Writing the Land is a collaborative community outreach and creative project for nature protection and forest restoration organizations and local communities in the Slieve Aughties. Through the development of an anthology and locally based participatory arts project, our artists, poets, community collaborators, and contributors are invited to join us in championing the once Great Forest of Aughty as a living, breathing archive that holds centuries of ancient mythology, ecological and social history, urgent for our times. As a site rich in biodiversity, cultural and historical connections and significance, the forest serves as the focal point for exploring the dynamic relationship between a people and their environment. Through this project, we aim to document, interpret, and co-create a shared narrative emphasising its relevance still to both the local, creative, native woodland, and environmental communities.

This creative platform wishes to invite participants to co-create with us a project that highlights the creative nexus between the land and inhabitants of Sliabh Aughty in multiple media, written and virtual. For more info please contact info@celtnet.org
