• The newsletter of the online community of Fourth Church •

We hope you will find here a celebration of the integral part you play in who Fourth Church is today — as well as an invitation to explore additional online opportunities for engaging with Fourth Church and connecting with one another.

A Note from Rocky Supinger

Friends,

It is my pleasure to extend some online well-wishes to you for the new year. Whether you connect to Fourth Church through the weekly worship livestream, through videos on our YouTube channel like “Rhythm and Word” or an adult education class, or through email devotions or our “Bible Top Ten” podcast, I hope that 2025 is a rich year of faith formation through your connection to Fourth Church.

Those online expressions of our church family I just named are only some of what we’re doing online. Cultivating our online community is a major pillar of the long-range plan that Fourth Church’s Session adopted last June, and to that end the Session appointed a task force to determine the best ways for us to engage one another online going forward. That group is chaired by an Elder, Margaret Douglas, who has already begun to lead it to consider what folks in our online community need and want, what kind of staff support our online family requires, and how we integrate online and in-person participation.

I'm working with that task force, too. Its members include Alan Bath, Craig Endicott, Kathy Rodak, Gavin Daniels, Marc Miller, Francia Harrington, Tom Hawkins, Barton Tretheway, and Ed Miller. You should look forward to hearing from some of these folks early in 2025 as they begin their work.

Thank you for being part of Fourth Church! May God bless us this year with strengthened relationships and vital expressions of our mission, in person and online, to be a light in the city.

Happy New Year!

Rocky Supinger

Who We Are

Usually we use this space to introduce you to fellow members of the online community, but this month we want to introduce you to Margaret Douglas, who is chairing the Online Church Family Task Force Rocky mentions above.

Margaret Douglas

What inspired you to take on the role of chair for the Online Church Family Task Force?

The importance of connections and belonging, as outlined in the long-range plan, inspired me. As a coach and leadership educator, I’ve read a good amount of research about the importance of connections and belonging. Connecting online is important for my clients and the students I serve at University of Chicago. This is my second year as an Elder on Session, so when we voted to create the task force, I was immediately interested in contributing.

What excites you the most about this work?

For me, expanding the ways we connect with each other and Fourth Church is a way of being more welcoming and inclusive. We’ve heard feedback that efforts to date are greatly appreciated. I’m excited to be taking this next step on the task force.

Can you tell us more about the Online Church Family Task Force and its purpose?

Our overarching goal is to deepen and expand relationships with those who find and connect with Fourth Church online. Many of the online programs and ministries started during the pandemic have continued because they are meeting needs for different members of the church family. This task force seeks to answer key questions toward a more comprehensive approach to serving, online, each other and our faith.

What are some of the skills and perspectives members of the task force bring to this work?

I had the opportunity to interview almost everyone on the task force last October and can

share that this is a highly skilled group of strategists, innovators, collaborators, philanthropists, and change makers. Many have served in multiple leadership roles, including as Trustees, Elders, council chairs, and campaign strategists, not to mention the formidable leadership they’ve offered organizations outside of church.

With regard to perspective, we’ve sought out individuals who can speak to different life experiences — going away to college, enjoying a second home, recovering from surgery, combatting a long commute, etc. Most of us are already engaging with Fourth Church online and are energized by this opportunity.

What plans does the task force have most immediately?

We are currently in a phase of listening and discovery. Staff and pastors have eagerly shared what they’re already doing to reach members outside of Chicago both in person and online. We’ve also drafted a set of survey questions to better understand the needs of those already — or thinking about — engaging with church online.

What do you see as the biggest opportunity for Fourth Church in connecting with its online worshipers?

I greatly appreciate the work that our pastors and staff have already done to livestream worship, create podcasts and devotionals, connect with identified online communities in Chicago and Florida, and include online participants in adult education, councils, committees, and task forces. The opportunity is to be more thoughtful, strategic, and intentional about connecting with online worshipers.

The task force is very interested in understanding unmet needs. What do online worshipers wish we could offer beyond what we currently offer? You’ve already talked about online coffee hour and solicited input via this newsletter. One task force member let me know how special the intergenerational opportunities are within their family. Another excitedly looks at adult education as an online opportunity. There may also be an online opportunity associated with key events, like the Gala of Hope.

We are also collaborating with Communications and long-range plan implementation task forces to spread the word about existing online opportunities including

  • Sunday morning worship
  • Concerts, including Friday Noonday and Tower Brass
  • “Rhythm and Word” midweek worship
  • Bible study for men and women
  • “Bible Top Ten” podcast
  • Most of our councils, committees, and task forces

How can members of the online church family get involved or provide feedback to the task force?

You can reach me at margaret@douglasleadershipcoaching.com or Senior Associate Pastor Rocky Supinger at rsupinger@fourthchurch.com. We welcome your involvement and will eagerly share feedback with the task force.

In addition, we’re working on a survey scheduled to go out in late January, which we hope will make it easy to provide input. When you receive the survey, please respond so your perspective can be heard!

What are you all learning about the Fourth Church community through this work?

There is much yet to be learned, but I can share some important starting points.

  • We learned that our membership resides in thirty-nine different states, and approximately 20 percent of our members are remote to the Chicago area.

  • We’re learning how many members want to remain part of the Fourth Church community even if they can’t be on campus with us.

  • We’ve learned that our online members are truly with us in spirit during Sunday worship and that they’re willing to give gifts of time, treasure, and talent when we make it possible to engage online.

  • We’re learning that it doesn’t have to be perfect the first time we try something: you’ll let us know how to improve, and we’ll get better and better.

The more we learn, the more we appreciate this wonderful community – both on campus and online!

Do you have a reflection to share about being part of the online community?

Please let Shawn Fiedler know: we’d love to share it!

January 12 Congregational Meeting Online

Including all members in the work of the church is important to us, and thus our congregational meetings are held not only in person but also via Zoom. Included in that Zoom connection is the option to vote online.

That is true of the meeting this Sunday.

As you will have read in the weekly “News @ Fourth Church” email newsletter, Session has called a Congregational Meeting for Sunday, January 12 at 12:15 p.m. (Central), at which time you will be asked to recommend that the Presbytery of Chicago dissolve Nanette Sawyer’s pastoral relationship with us, since the Associate Pastor for Discipleship and Small Group Ministry position has been eliminated in 2025.

This is part of the staff reductions made by Session and Trustees to help Fourth Church move toward a balanced budget and also part of the staff reorganization undertaken to help us live into our long-range plan.

For those of us participating via Zoom, there will be one online vote per device. So, for example, if both members of a couple accustomed to viewing a Zoom session on the same device would like to vote individually rather than cast a joint vote, they will need to log in to Zoom on separate devices.

Video Message from Interim Pastor Tom Are Jr.

As Tom Are has shared, our 2025 plans are grounded in our living into our long-range plan and vision for the future, addressing financial realities, and preparing the way to welcome a new pastor when the Pastor Nominating Committee concludes their search.

If you have not yet viewed the video message from Tom Are recapping 2024 and sharing plans for ministry at Fourth Church in 2025, we encourage you to take a few moments to view it by clicking above.

Stories and storytellers have been a part of human history throughout time. It is one of the things all cultures share. It is the way we connect with those who have gone before us and provides guidelines for those who will come after us. They are also the way we welcome someone into our family or group. Stories are threads that bind us to one another.

Participants in this four-week interactive workshop will learn basic storytelling techniques as well as tips to create and develop their own personal stories. This is a great opportunity to learn something new, stretch your neurons, and meet new people!

Also offered via Zoom are several fitness classes, French, music history, and drawing fundamentals.

These classes are part of the CLL Winter Term Membership package. You can learn more about them — and about becoming a CLL member! — at fourthchurch.org/cll

While all these classes are Zoom-only offerings, you will also find on the website listings of classes that are hybrid, with in-person and Zoom participants joining in the same session.

Where Are You Streaming Worship?

Each Sunday, when online worshipers fill out the “Welcome to Worship!” form, they share the location from which they are joining us, be it across the street from the church or places around the world, from Japan to Kenya.

One of the locations that is on the list every week is the Admiral at the Lake senior living residences in Chicago, where a faithful community of Fourth Church members and friends gathers every Sunday morning to watch together the livestream of morning worship.

In December, Nancy Benson-Nicol, Associate Pastor for Connection and Belonging, and several Deacons (including a Youth Deacon) worshiped with this online congregation and enjoyed socializing at the coffee hour afterward.

With holiday travels taking our members near and far, our location list grows with new places, including this festive living room in San Salvador, El Salvador.

Where do you stream worship? If you haven’t added your location to the “Welcome to Worship!” form, we’d love to add it to our place list.

Please email Ann Rehfeldt to let her know where you are streaming from — and if you have a photo to share of your online worship experience, please send that along too!
