The red tide bloom off Sanibel and Captiva may be in decline based on lower counts as well as a shift in satellite imagery that shows it moving to the north and south of the islands. The images above show the difference between Jan. 27 (on left) and yesterday's composite imagery. SCCF Marine Lab scientists say conditions are improving and the bloom may have run its course for the time being, despite patches that remain offshore. Sloan Connects with Former SCCF Interns at Conference
SCCF Coastal Wildlife Director Kelly Sloan was thrilled to learn what several former SCCF sea turtle interns are now doing at last week's Southeast Regional Sea Turtle Meeting in Hilton Head. From left to right, Emily Skinner (2022 intern) is a Ph.D. student at University of Florida, Savannah Weber is SCCF's current Sea Turtle Biologist, Emily Hardin (2017 intern) is Conservation Programs Manager of Sea Turtles at Disney, Sloan, Bailey Yarborough (2023 intern) is a Conservation Technician with Jekyll Island Authority, and Sabrina Sorace (2022 intern) is a Biologist at the St. Croix Sea Turtle Project.
"They are all thriving," said Sloan. "Seeing their amazing contributions to sea turtle conservation makes me so proud."

Piping Plover Print Supports SCCF's Shorebird Program!
NYC-based illustrator Kesia Finley is generously donating 15% of proceeds from her limited edition piping plover print, “The Tide’s Peep,” to SCCF and our partners at Great Lakes Piping Plovers. Our Coastal Wildlife staff work closely with the Great Lakes group throughout the year to ensure the future of these federally endangered shorebirds. Finley’s prints will first go on sale to her email subscribers at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13.

Hendry County Students Learn About Shorebirds
Inspiring future biologists with Sanibel Sea School’s A Chance to Sea program! Fifth grade students from Up the Grove Elementary School in Hendry County visited the flagship campus to learn all about shorebirds. After a quick lesson about birding etiquette, students headed to the beach in search of common shorebirds using ID guides and games to learn more about these species.

LOCATION CHANGE: Weeds 'n Seeds Feb. 17
Next week's Weeds ‘n’ Seeds plant walk has been moved to SCCF's Johnston Preserve, a beautiful upland habitat favored by gopher tortoises. We'll meet at 9 a.m. at the gate across from the Children’s Education Center of the Islands (350 Casa Ybel Road), which has generously offered their parking lot to attendees as there is no street side parking.

Funding for Home Elevation Now Available
The Florida Department of Emergency Management has launched its new “Elevate Florida” residential mitigation program, which offers eligible homeowners the opportunity to elevate, reconstruct, or implement wind mitigation measures on their homes with up to 75% of costs covered. FISH of SanCap is providing assistance to guide homeowners through the application process, including navigating additional financial assistance opportunities for those who struggle to cover the 25% homeowner cost-share requirement.
